Exclamation Potential New Buyers Concerns

First of all, I am 18 and will be entering college as a freshman to college this September. I am extremely interested in buying a third generation RX-7. My price range is $10,000 to $12,000. Although I want to jump right in and buy the first nice one I see, I am worried about the reliability of these cars. I am willing to put time and love into the maintainence of the car, but I'm worried about the cost of up-keep on the vehicle. I'm also worried about somekind of engine failure and not having a car to get me to school and work. Is this not the car for me? (I would really like to hear from the owners!)

Forgive me if I'm offending or seeming paranoid, but recently I've had a few people tell me their horror stories of the problems they have had.

i think for the market now, you wont' be able to find a very good reliable FD for 10K-12K. I think a good one costs at least 14-16K.

If you do buy one for 10-12K, there is a chance it will be high mileage or have problems in which case it won't be very reliable. Also make sure you have money saved up to do some reliablity mods or take care of the car like it needs.

Also, an FD isn't a good car if you can 'barely' afford it.

Get a Turbo 2nd gen instead for now. With your budget, you'll be able to more easily afford one and the maintenance. Relying on a $12k FD (or any FD for that matter) to get you to work and school every day is not a good idea. These cars are not reliability nightmares if maintained but they do cost a lot to maintain and things DO go wrong occasionally. Even the best maintained FDs are usually down a couple days of the year for something or another.

Additionally, an FD will be a prime target for vandals and jealous ********, both of which are plentiful on the standard college campus.

BTW, have you investigated how much insurance costs on an FD for someone your age?

Insurance costs are thankfully not an issue.

Look, you can't buy a better sports car for 16K. I spent a little over that for a silver PEP w/54,000mi. Now it only lasted a year of driving like an *** (high boost FUN, FUN, fun Ohh ****....) and I am now spending 16+K to make the car better faster. It's just a toy, for a daily driver get a Hummer

I'm going to CLOSE this thread as we get about 4 a day for new rx-7 owners with reliability questions.

Please SEARCH upper right corner for "reliability"

"Have a nice day"

Thanks, Jeff
