Possible Turbo Problem?
Possible Turbo Problem?
Hey guys, I am hoping to get some insight about a possible failure of my turbos. I took the car to the dealer to get it checked out for a power loss. I thought maybee it was a fuel problem or turbo valve malfunction. They said everything fine except some oil from the turbos and filthy air filters. I am only getting about 4-5 psi of boost from the first turbo, and then no more. The car still runs and drives just fine until you give it some gas and the turbos spool up. It revs smoothly to about 5500 RPM and then not much more beyond that. I have full 3 inch exhaust and DP, as well as apexi intake, with stock ECU and fuel system. The turbos seem to leak some oil(a few drops on the garage floor ever few days), but no smoke out the back while driving. Do you think I need new ones? If so where is the best place to get replacements? Thanks for your time.
First of all, sorry to be harsh, but it is really dumb to run a full exhaust with the stock ecu, especially with an intake. You must hit fuel cut all of the time. The only ways you could only be getting 4-5 psi would be either a major boost leak (torn IC couplers, BOV leaking, etc) or your turbos are shot.
From your symptoms, I would guess you have a leak. If this is the case, I wouldn't fix the leak until you get an aftermarket ecu capable of handling your mods.
Edit: also, you have to be very wary of Mazda dealers with this car. They can do basic stuff but they are not capable of diagnosing turbo control problems.

I agree with rynberg here, if by saying "full exhaust" you mean midpipe catback and downpipe you are asking for trouble with the stock ecu. I would upgrade the ecu asap then fix the boost leak, it sounds to me that an IC coupler or hose is slpit somewhere, either around the y-pipe of the IC itself. You will need to take the hoses and couplers off to further examine them for damage. Let us know what you find.
