possessed idle...

ARGHHH! One thing after another. I am driving the car today. I have the idle screw on top backed up enough so it is barely keeping pushing the throttle plates open. I have the air screw underneath adjusted so that the idle is about 900-1000. Great...so I go and drive and things seem normal. I drive further getting into 4th gear. I see a stop sign so I decide to throw it in neutral and coast to it. The freaking idle is at 2k-2400! Tapping the pedal doesn't help. I test it a different way I just driving in 1st to about 3k, then just letting off the accelerator and letting it slow itself to about 1500...I push the clutch in, the car jumps up to about 2k again. SOOO...I check underneath and magically, I have a TON of room to back out the TOP screw as if while I was driving it, someone magically had screwed it down a lot to open the throttle plates. I know this is gotta have something to do with the dashpot I would think....any other thoughts?
