POLL: Reman Rebuilding...

How has recieved a brand new reman and pulled it apart before ever running it to make sure things are good inside? Who has just put it in the car? What kind of mileage/longevity have you had on your remans?

I hear the quality is good now a days...It's almost cheaper to buy a reman-$2600 (comes with new housings and seals) then to buy two new housings-$650x2 and a rebuild kit $1200.

if you get it and pull it apart(to mod or whatever)...the only seals you'll need to replace are the water jackets-$100

I just blew a reman with 26k on it 2 weeks ago. They are leaning towards some sort of turbo failure that caused the problem.

They are going to install another reman for me this winter and rebuild the turbos if neccessary along with some additional reliability mods, and possibly, if it is still availiable, get me a 2yr/24k warranty on the reman. He said last time he did a reman, that it was some rediculously low price to upgrade the warranty, like less than 100 bucks. We'll see though when it comes time. I'm buying a new pickup soon, so I'm just going to let the 7 sit for a couple months before I address it's problems. Damn I'm going to miss her.

Interesting thoughts. Again, I don't like the idea of mixing my used housing with another persons used housing and all that crap. I really don't even need the ported Irons I have to be honest....I just want a nice, reliable, streetable 7

I had mine pulled apart. The e-shaft bearing surface was pretty rough . Otherwise it was fine. Ray at Malloy said he would replace it, but I didn't take him up on it since the engine builder was planning on repolishing it anyway.

Ugh...that looks like it came from an engine that spun a bearing previously. E-shafts are SO cheap and SO plentiful (all 86+ are the same) that there is no reason to try and use a questionable on. Housings, irons, and rotors, I can halfway see. But eshafts...no way.

That e-shaft is from an engine that had very poor oil changes or used poor filters. The scratches are from debris in the oil, which can develop when a filter looses its efficiency.

I attached a pic of a burnt crankshaft. I would expect a spun bearing to be similar. You can tell which throw spun...

how many of the above are actually recent?

Most people just drop them in and go. If you have budget for it and a reliable person to take it apart and put it back together, it can't hurt to check. Otherwise just drop it in and make sure everything else is OK - clean injectors, coolant hoses good, fuel filter etc.

My reman from Malloy has about 50K on it now and is humming along perfectly. All I did was take the engine out of the crate and stick it in the car.

I did have the paper front cover gasket begin leaking after a couple years or so and had to fix that. If (when) I buy another reman I'll redo the front cover and pan gaskets before installing.

Thanks Damon. I am going to spec all my parts out. I know for a fact that I have to replace a rotor housing, so I will compare costs to eachother and then make my decision of which route to go.

The admin must be doing something. Hopefully changing/upgrading database servers so we don't get that stupid database error when browsing the forum during busy hours.
