I am converting the power steering rack into a manual from a 2nd gen. Well, the alignment rods from the 3rd gen is about 1" longer than the 2nd gen so I want to switch them out. Only problem is I don't know how they come out. There's a big nut that's on there but I don't know if it is there for turning.

Hey John,

I'm not really seeing the nut in the picture, but I've had two tie rods off FD racks, replaced them with no problems. It's been awhile so this is from a slightly foggy memory.

You need to bend back the steel washer that holds the nut, it should be bent over the nut in 1-2 places. After you bend the washer back just undo the big nut and the tie rod (you called them alignment arms) will come off the rack.

I'd replace that big washer if it were my car, but if you want to reuse it make sure that you don't rebend the same spot. Flatten it while it is out to help with reinstallation, don't pound the crap out of it, carefully flatten it.

Should be pretty simple, good luck.

Jeff

hey turbojeff

I am replacing the inner and outer tie rods on my FD. Is the job easy, or should I pay someone to do it. What exactly do you have to do? I have the shop manual, but it is not specific.

Inner and outer tie rod ends not a hard job at all, although after your done you may have to get an alignment

RedTT yes thats the nut that holds the inner rod,you must bend the washer back to get it out, dunno if the inner rods from the 3rd gen is the right thread though

hey Red TT does that 2nd gen rack bolt right in??
