Please ID this part for me!
I'm in the process of putting my engine back together after converting to non-sequential. However, i ran across this pipe coming from the engine, and i can't remember where it goes or if it was even connected to anything prior to my disassembling the parts and hoses.
What is it?
Does this thing connect to anything? If so, what?
If it doesn't connect to anything, do i definitely have to cap it off?
I've looked through the service manual multiple times as well as the parts pdf but couldn't find any references to this piece. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I'd put a cap on that if I were you. I believe it's part of an emission control system.
Is your motor a rebuilt unit?? If so, are all the irons from an FD?? I went out to my garage and double-checked.
I looked at my '93 Mazda rebuild with 20k miles on it - no nipple.
I then looked at my '97 J-Spec motor - no nipple.
I looked at an intermediate housing from my old '90 n/a motor - yes nipple!!
I got out my old S5 FSM and looked - sure enough, both the n/a and TII motors have that nipple - it's part of the emission control system. That nipple would normally have a hose running to a charcoal canister.
So cap it, otherwise you will probably have a bit of oil venting to atmosphere there, and it might lead to a messy engine bay

thanks for the info and double checking for me busy13b...i was wondering why not all motors had that nipple. it's a 93...built in 92...so i'm not surprised...that also explains why there's some oil residue in that area.
