Oh man, this ordeal was crazy, I dont know how I missed the tread till now. You need to see if there is anyway you can get that engine back. You should have your new mechanics open it up and see if it was really blown or not. The comment about the bad coil sounds spot on to me....its exactly what I was thinking when you said the coil was bad.

Even if it cost money I'd buy it back. Then use it against them in court when you find out it was a good motor.

Do you happen to know if they did a compression test??? What were the results? You need to ask them for the compression test results then when they dont have them look at them shocked and say " you mean you didnt test it? Then how did you know it was bad?"

The Mazda dealer service department may be the greatest threat to these 3rd generation cars. DO NOT go to a dealer for service unless you get a recommendation FROM ANOTHER RX-7 owner first. Some dealers do a great job. However, many dealers do not appear to be properly trained to service these cars and do more damage than repairs. There are enough good dealers and independent shops that specialize in this particular vehicle that service should not be a major problem."

 

 

First - Sorry, not $400 for just pads - I had to replace the front calipers, too.

Second - Guess what? My car's back in the shop. There is a major coolant leak. I took most of the hoses off and removed the airbox trying to find it myself, and I found that one little outlet on the water pump housing was leaking, shooting coolant everywhere when the engine was revved. Good news is, the part is under warrantee, so I get the job done for free. Sadly, they won't have the part in until next week, so I'm stuck driving the Jeep again. Maybe it's best, anyway - there is snow on the ground here. Anyway, I'll try to keep everyone posted, and thanks for the interest

Really late to this thread, but taking a rotary to the Mazda dealer is without a doubt one of the "7-sins". Sorry to hear about the crap your going through.

I really miss my car - on the way back down here, while driving in the crappy jeep, I passed 3 "modified" civics, a prelude, an MR2, an IS300, and a couple of Integras with exhaust! I feel so deprived not being able to race them! I need my car back ASAP, but at least I don't have to fork over any money this time.

 

If they replaced the engine and they still had the problem and then replaced the coils and the problem went away, logic would dictate that the coils were the problem, not the motor. Did they compression test the engine before deciding to replace it?

 

Yes, they did - I know that for sure. (At least, that's what they told me). I think, the coil went bad, a boost sensor was already bad, and I had a hole in my turbo piping - and all that caused the engine to rip itself apart. Basically, that's just my opinion; who knows for sure? I just want my car back and in working condition - for once

 

The 3 problems U listed should not really harm the engine, unless it went like that for a long time.

And it would hardly be drivable in that condition. It would probably bearly start, if at all. Then smoke black smoke and pop when running. it would have no power either.

Please never take your car to the dealer again. For $4k you could tow your car to us, we would replace the motor and you would still have $2k left over for performance parts

 

I don't plan on ever taking it there again, and trust me - if I had know about you guys before my engine died, or even when my clutch went out, I would have never taken it to them in the first place. It was a matter of convenience that has turned into my worst nightmare - and it never seems to end. I hope to see you guys soon so you can install some aftermarket stuff, if 1.) I ever get my car back, and 2.) I ever have any money again

Hey Tyler... a little late...

but a burnt spot on an ignition coil suggests poor grounding. The negative current wants too badly to return to the ground point and it will actually flow through the positive side (burning and screwing things up). If this is the case then it will probably burn out again in a few hundred miles. Just thought I'd let you in on that, actually heard that yesterday from an experienced mechanic.

 

DEALERSHHHHHIPS R GAYYYYYYYYYYYYYY! charged me 400 bucks for a gay *** airbox( just the airbox no hoses or n/e thing else) ... -.-;; how gay! dealerships don't know n/e thing more than n/e other machanic know about rotary! plus they over price! BS restocking fee you can restock these NUTS!! sorry about my hostility! but i am very bitter towards dealerships! got screwed to many times! and took me a long time to finally learn NEVER GO TO DEALERSHIPS!

 

But if it took over 123,000 miles to burn out the first time, why would it burn out in only a few hundred this time (considering that I have already driven it over 500 miles)?

 

Well my guess is that the ground has gotten dirty, and it didn't necessarily start off that way

I guess it wouldn't have to be in a few hundred miles, just the one I heard about was going out every 150 miles.. lol.

Well if it happens again soon try and check out the grounding... otherwise, rock on I guess

You were right - this engine died too. It died when they were testing it at the dealership. Then they wanted to know if I had let it overheat or something (trying to blame it on me). Now they have to replace this engine.

You've got to be kidding me!!! The new engine these clowns just installed is allready dead?!?! Get that thing the hell out of their grasp and over to Chris or Jason ASAP. I think it's time you took this matter to court, I'd sue them for the total amount you paid since you're right back where you started, if not, worse! keep us updating...

 

I would sue them for time and damages.. These guys are not qualified to work on a RX-7.. Let alone any car... An engine swap is an engine swap.. If they can't get that right, don't expect them to get anything right.

You would think you would listen to us.. We told you before you started this adventure it was a bad idea.. BTW what happened to the engine this time? it probably isn't really dead... Hell your 1st engine probably wasn't dead. (Not really sure about your 1st engine, you never described what happened)..

he already had his car at the dealership when he first started posting. i dont think making him feel worse right now is a good thing. i am sure he feels bad enough as it is.

does anyone know of a reputable mazda dealership he could at least call, tell them the situation, and find out what his rights legally might be?

 

Well, we told him to stop them before they had the engine out.. because they couldn't figure out how to do it.. I guess it was already partially started.

And i am not trying to make him feal bad. I am trying to get him to take the car somewhere else for his own sanity. I bet he will hate RX-7s if he goes through much more with them. He needs to just trailer the car down to the RX7Store or A-Spec.
