Please Help!!

Hey Guys, i have done quite a few searching on this website for the proper procedure of topping off coolant and have come up with nothing. There is quite a bit of extensive information on flushing the cooling system, purging the system etc, but nothing on just the basic procedure of adding coolant. Just before the end of last summer, i noticed that the stock Coolant Gauge yes i know the Gauge that is very inaccurate, is now showing the Needle a bit higher than its linear setting. I have installed an after market Water Temp Gauge, and had performed the Fan Mod etc with removing the AC fuse, and read a solid Temp of 190 degrees Farenheit. This procedure was done a few years ago. The Coolant was flushed yearly and pressure tested before last summer, everything tested fine. The Car is only driven 6 month out of the year. It is due for another one and I plan to get it done ASAP. But for the time being where do I add the Coolant and test at the same time if i am losing any coolant. Is it simply just removing the filler neck adding coolant to top it off, with the engine off, then Start the car with Cap off and watch if the level comes down, add if level comes down and continue to add at filler neck until car its operating temp?

I think your over complicating what is a very simple and basic procedure. Simply open the filler cap when the car is cold (the one next to the air pump NOT the AST cap), have a look at what level the coolant is.

If it is full then your fine - no need to top anything up. If it is below the neck then you simply need to top it up. If you don't have extra coolant lying around when you flush it the first time, then I usually just add some distilled or demineralized water instead of mixing up different coolants.

Also if your running low on coolant, you should hear a boiling sound after you shut off your engine.

If you've got a leak then thats a different story altogether. Simply a matter of finding the leak, which can be tricky, then tracing it back. Start with the simple things like the upper and lower radiator hose, the AST lines and also the overflow bottle. If you find it leaking out of the overflow, this usually means your AST or filler cap is shot, which means the system isnt pressurized and can't draw the coolant back into the system. This results in you constantly topping it up with coolant after every time you drive and so forth. Find the leak fix it and you should never have to top the coolant up so regularly.

Can't remember off the top of my head but when the car is running hot the coolant level will drop from the filler neck. After it cools down, the system will suck the coolant out from the overflow bottle back into the system and the level of the coolant at the neck should be back to normal.
