I had pictures of mine till my computer crashed, damn thing. I had a feeling to back the pictures up on a cd, but by then it was too late. I pulled mine in the snow, and ice, and broke it down on two tires, I hated to mess with the engine stand. But I know I will have to put it back together on one.

THis is a great thread with great pictures man! I might have to call upon you if you don't mind when I begin to reinstall it under the hood, I know its going to be a kick in the ***** as you mentioned. Did you end up getting your front rear and intermediate housings lapped?, they looked a little roughed up in the pictures. What really sucked for me is when I pulled the rotors off all the seals fell out like toothpicks!

Very nice work saxyman! Im having that problem come up now. My 7 has 64,000 miles and the coolant seals has gone bad. I live near you in Cincinnati...maybe sometime i'll have ya come fix mine!

I know there's plenty of people on the boards that have built their own motors (since I finished this one, I built 4 more), and I'm sure you're right: they all have almost exactly the same pictures. But, for some reason, not many of them post their pics on the forum. I know this would have helped me tremendously when I was building it. But unfortunately, most of the threads that I saw pertaining to rebuilds either didn't have many pictures, or the thread was so old that the pictures were no longer there. I just hope this thread helps some people, or at least entertains them for a little while.

Yep, it was extremely easy. As with anything, I had my share of "sticky" moments, but overall it was very straight-forward. Of course, I'm also a mechanical engineer with a pretty decent understanding of cars (I've been rebuilding cars since I was 12), so that definitely didn't hurt my case.

 

Don't joke.... I'll do pretty much anything for beer...

I started in June, and fired it up for the first time near the end of September. So altogether, it was about 4 months. However, keep in mind that I had other things going on at the same time, so I was really only able to work on it for a few hours on the weekends, and maybe once or twice during the week. Plus, I bought a house in August (notice how the garage in the final pictures, is different than the first pictures), so that threw a big wrench in the time-table. I took my time, but I feel that it paid off fairly well.

 

No problem, I definitely don't mind being asked questions. So if you need any help when it comes time to put everything back together, just let me know. Good luck!

The irons look bad in the pictures, but I assure you that was just the camera. The plates themselves were in GREAT shape with virtually no stepping or wear. I determined that they really didn't need lapping (Steve Kan agreed with me).

As I mentioned before, I do all my own work on my cars (and always have). It'll be no different in the future. Of course, if I had to do it over again, I'd probably do a few things differently. Maybe I wouldn't have splurged so much on the "bling" stuff... but you only live once right?

 

Glad that you car is finally running and running strong. I hope that the port work gives you an extra hp you were looking for. I was wondering what happened to your car since its been awhile since I did the port job.

 

heh heh, thanks Steve! I guess I've just been too preoccupied with other things recently, so I kind of fell off the earth for a little while.

I gotta tell you though, the port work you did was absolutely amazing! I completely love the way the car runs, and the way it feels on the mid and top end. I'm sure this goes without saying, but for anyone else that is interested in having some port work done, Steve is your man (not like you really need the endorsement though). Thanks!

Now I just gotta find the time to take a road trip down there so you can tune it
