Picking up my new FD. Need Tuning advice
Hello gents,
I posted an earlier thread asking if FD is a dying platform and if should I get one:
https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generati...t-one-1001479/
Well, I did purchase it and I’ll be picking it up this weekend.
Now need your advice on tuning.
The car details are this:
Single owner 1993 base FD. 28k miles
It was driven stock for years and then began a conversion to aggressive street/occasional track car.
Engine has had reliability hose job done but is otherwise internally stock. mods:
Knightsports v-mount IC + radiator
Kightsports intake + AST
efini Y-pipe
Supra fuel pump
BNR stage 3 twin turbos
SMB downpipe.
Bonez high flow catted midpipe
Racing Beat twin tip catback.
Apexi Power FC
Running evans coolant
After the engine mods were installed, the owner put on 2 manual boost controllers limiting the boost to 8-6-8 until the PFC could be put on. (otherwise it’s a time bomb on the stock ecu)
I will be trailering the car down to Rotary Reliability and Racing in Santa Ana to have the PFC installed and tuned.
My goal is streetability and reliability, not max on-the-edge power. The car will mostly be a street toy but will see occasional track day duty. In the long run I plan to install water injection for a margin of safety but want to tune without it.
What kind of HP numbers do you guys think these mods will yield with a conservative tune?
Do you think I need any other fuel system upgrades beyond the Supra fuel pump? are bigger injectors necessary?
Apparently Nelson the tuner at RRR is very good so I’ll listen to his advice but I figure knowledge from the forum is power.
thanks in advance.

I would say you need bigger injectors to go above 12psi. I did a 15psi run with stock injectors and hit 100% duty. I might have been a bit rich but regardless the fuel system was maxed.
You could always get 1300 injectors, and they would be a straight drop in. With those you could likely get up to 18psi range.
As for HP numbers it depends how much boost you run, how generous the dyno is, temperature, and how conservative is conservative. Everyone is different but you are likely in the 300-400hp.
I left a big window but you didn't answer all the variables

looks like a really nice setup. I would 2nd on the injectors. swap out the 2ndaries for some 1300ccs which will require sending your stock 850s to injector servicing companies such as RC engineering.
stock injectors you're good up to 12 psi on a safe tune, with 1300cc secondaries, you can run up to 15psi. After you get WI, the car will need a re-tune
depends on whether your BNRs are sequential or not. non-sequential puts out more power. if it's sequential, it's unlikely you'll break 400whp
I would change the fuel filter and spark plugs before the tune if that hasn't been done in a while

He has BNR twins.... with everything else optimized on my old setup I made 350 rwhp at 12 psi on a dynojet. Non-seq however.
You'll definitely want bigger fuel injectors.
