Question Picking up my 3rd gen in less than two weeks...what 1st?

Whats up guys. Ok I finally found an 3rd gen to get. It's a 93' touring - black with tan leather. The car has 40k original miles on it, and it is all stock. My friend that has an rx-7 said the first thing I need to do is replace is the plastic coolant air seperator with this aluminum one from Pettit racing:

Also, I'm pretty sure the car has had all the mazda recalls taken care of, so I don't really need to worry about those.

I also read that one of the first things you should get is a boost gauge.

So is there anything I should replace before I start picking and choosing new parts? I just want to make sure I'm not going forget a little thing and have problems.

replace the pre-cat with a downpipe, it helps keep the engine temps down and thus helps reliability, you also get a nice extra kick in boost. with that and the other two things you mentioned, you've got the top three reliability mods covered.

good luck with the car btw, drive carefully and have fun.

First?

You should get all the fluids, filters and spark plugs changed.

Thanks guys. I made up a list of the first things I want to buy. Here it is:

1) Aluminum coolant air seperator $150 (pettit racing)
2) Boost gauge, air/fuel gauge, dual pillar $200 (ebay)
3) 3" downpipe and midpipe $250 (ebay)
4) BLITZ FATT DC II Turbo Timer $90 (ebay)
5) APEXi DIGITAL AVC-R boost controller $400 (ebay)

other stuff will follow....

$1090 well invested...

oh yah, and my friend is giving me his blitz blow off valve that he just took of his FD, and his old apexi intake setup

I'd save that $$ for the boost controller and invest it in an aftermarket radiator, or cat-back exhaust. Then again, i'm not sure what your intended use for the car is.

Don't waste your money on a turbo timer. No need for it.

Buy a K&N air filter. Replace the fuel filter.

Do the fan mod.

I suggest not buying the turbo timer; they are worthless and unnecessary. I don't know about the boost controller, but if you don't have any extensive mods, you shouldn't need it either. Also, I don't know what kind of gauges you are quoting for $200, but I bought a dual pillar mount, a water temp and boost gauge, and I think the total was somewhere around $125 (they were Autometer gauges). I would also HIGHLY recommend buying a water temp gauge instead of the air/fuel. The stock water temp gauge is garbage and tells you nothing. Another option is to modify the stock temp gauge to linearize it (do a search on linearize and you should find some info).

You can save yourself some money and eliminate the AST instead of buying the expensive replacement.
Other than that. The typical plugs, filters, boost guage, downpipe, catback, egt guage, intake.
In that order from my experience. Definitely change the plugs often. That will keep your risk of detonation down. I change them every 2 oil changes, but I think I could get away with it being spread out a bit more.
