Picked up my RX-7 yesterday BUT...
We made a mistake transferring the title, and at the moment the title is void. Yes, void. Filling out the buyer/seller information on the back of the title, the seller accidentally began writing 'Mazda RX-7 VIN JM...' on the line for trade-in information. There is no trade-in; this information didn't belong there. Error #1.
So he quickly stops himself and squiggles out the error so that it can't be read. Error #2. (should have used a single line, leaving error legible).
In the margin of the title it clearly states that any alteration or deletion voids the title. We were both worried about it, and asked the notary if she knew what we should do about it, she didn't know. We didn't call the PA DMV or anything. I left with this title. Error #3.
I drive 160mi from NJ to central PA - past about 15 cops, driving nervously, not speeding at all. Didn't get pulled over (and consequently raped for having no registration or valid title). Right before I got home some dumbass kid in a neon was partly crossed into my lane nearly hit me. One of those where you wet yourself about 2 miles later. It's in the garage and staying there until this is fixed. Error #4, but I got away with it.
To fix the title problem, we needed to each write an affadavit stating the nature of the error on the title, that we were both present, and there is nothing fraudulent about it, and get them each notarized. Only with these original documents can I get the title transferred to PA.
If you're still reading, maybe you'll learn from my little comedy of errors. Call the DMV when in doubt, only use a single line to eliminate mistakes on a legal document, and never drive through Jersey in a red sportscar and no vehicle paperwork whatsoever.

When I bought my fd, we went inside to do the titling and all that, when I didn't know was his son was removing the plates while we were inside. When I came out (didn't need to inspect the car, I had earlier for hours) I got in and drove away for the 4 hour drive home... with no plates. Didn't get pulled over or see any cops, but when I got home i nearly passed out.

Dave,
Where in PA do you live. If the title transfer did not fly, He might be able to file for a duplicate title and get it. This would then be transferred properly. Best way is to get the legal work done like you said.
