petrol in the engine oil ???
petrol in the engine oil ???
When I last opened the oil cap to top up my oil I noticed that there was some brownish liquid on the inside of the cap. It smells like petrol.
Can it be ??? If yes what does it mean?

Is it the white gunk with brownish tint? b/c that is what I had. I did some research, adn it can be a host of things. First off my oil smells like gas nomatter what, I think most FDs do. The gunk can be from coolant in the oil arising from water. it also can be from always driving short distances and not letting car warm up. My porblem with it went away when I replaed my water thermosensor. it was off by 5 degrees making the car run rich and cooler than normal by putting fans on at 75C
I now have no problems with it, adn car runs great. I think eveyone shoudl replace water thermosenor as regular maintenace I never exhibited the tradtional problems associated with it of poor idle, etc. just rich and never heating up. Are you loosing coolant?

It's funny that his post should be so new.
I had a hell of a time getting my oil cap off about 2 months agp. I had to use channel locks to twist it loose and same with the oil filter. No I didn't tighten them that tight. There was brownish residue on the threads of the oil cap. I assumed it might be from condensation as well as the little drop of water on the bottom of th filler neck. Well got the oil change and every thing went fine.
Well, I took a trip to my parents(255 miles) and upon returning I decided to check my oil and coolant. Well HOLY **** it's a good thing I did because my coolant was 1/2 of a pint low. Topped it off and away I go. I get home Sunday night no problem and I check it again Monday and it's low again. Same amount. I then take off the oil cap and **** there is a ton of brownish **** all in there.
This is the very same case as was with my CR125R the nut for the water pump impeller came loose...breaking the seal and letting coolant enter into my crankcase. It mixes with the oil and foams out through the overfill hole.
****, I guess I needed smonething to work on again.
I will talk to Dave @KDR to ask what's up. I'll keep you posted later.

Till now I haven't noticed the brownish foam anymore. Someone else in Malta told me it must have been condensation or slow driving in traffic. I do not loose coolant (only a bit sometimes).
To KZ1 - Your idea of changing the water thermosensor might be a good idea. In fact my RX7 is idiling at 1100 RPM normally.
To DCLIN - Nice photo of Comino island. But I think RX7 owners in Malta are like birds in a cage. Too small. Anyway I still enjoy it but I'd rather be in the states with my RX7.
To WhiteKingSnake - What did Dave tell you?

I used to get foaming in the engine oil especially after hard driving (track events) in the summer. I have also seen it with a lot of other cars, not just RX7's. I switched to synthetic oil years ago and have never had that problem again. I don't know exactly what causes it but some of the synthetic oils actually advertise that they do not foam like conventional oils. Is foaming a serious problem? I don't know but it sure doesn't look healthy.
If your oil reeks of gasoline that indicates that your running to rich, gas in your engine oil is definately not good, change your oil ASAP.
