If the cooling system was blocked, wouldn't one of the lines burst open?

Hold onto the line that goes from the water pump housing to the heater core. Is it hot? Get under the dash on the pax side - check the brass fittings going to the heater core - are they hot?

That'll help you determine if hot fluid is at least getting to the core...

Ran it without a thermostat installed, no overheat, and the heater works. Unfortunately, now there is a leak at the brass tube junction for the heater core. ugh.

In the end, my lesson for everyone:

Before going crazy with a problem similar to this - run the system without a thermostat. I could have saved A LOT of time and effort if I had just done this first.

Thanks for everyone's help. If anyone knows an easy way to stop a brass junction from leaking, let me know!
I didn't think you can do that? I'll give it a try.

The lesson is; use the proper parts.. The "napa" thermostat does not have the plunger that blocks the bypass port in the thermohousing. Use the OEM thermostat! Your car will never run properly without the thermostat installed. It will run too cool on the highway and the ECU will run in warmup mode (below 180F) , pushed it will likely overheat.
