overheated coolant problem help?
overheated coolant problem help?
Hi wounder ig there is someone out there that can help me whit my problem.
It all started whit that i torqed the engine bolts after that i took out all the water I THINK frome the system by the bottom plug on the cooler. after that i filled it up whit 2l water and 1 l glycol then i i fired up the engine to burp the system and everything was fine ,the temp was exactly as it should be.
A coupple of weeks after i was going to the garage to put on the endpipe of the exhaust. Then i checked the coolant and it was full on the messure stick, by this time i tohugt that my dad had filled it up.
so i started it and it went up to 75 degrees and it stay there then i drove it for like 3min everything was fine. and then suddenly it went up to 120 so i stopped the car at the garage waited untill the boiling water had stopped boiling. then i checked the messure stick and it was still full.
I called my dad and he said he didnt filled any coolant.
Now! what is the problem? is it just the thermostat that is broken or can it just be stuck?
I were lucky because it was - degrees outside. so could it be the thermostat that got stuck because of the cold?

First off, the FD's coolant system holds about 9 litres of coolant - not 3.
So unless you didnt drain it all (which i dont think you did) - then it cant be full if you only added 3litres of liquid.
You proberbly didnt drain all the coolant as in order to drain all the coolant out of the system you need to drain the engine block and also the radiator - you only mentioned one so im guessing you didnt drain the whole system properly.
There are a few reasons why your car might have overheated - these are my guesses as to why.
1) .Thermostat not working
2) Air in the system
3) coolant not filled correctly.
I would say by what youv said that number 2 or 3 will be your problem. If it was fine before you attempted to change the coolant then that suggests air bubbles or not enough coolant.
DId you take the coolant hose off the near the throttle body elbow when you were attempting to add coolant?, it lets air get out of the system so you can get more coolant in
Also did the Low coolant buzzer go off? or did your car just overheat? and no buzzer sounded?
Also, check the coolant level at the filler neck - not the overflow tank. Its easy for the overflow tank to be full but for your coolant system to have a problem.
e.g. overflow tank will remain full after engine shutdown (no matter the actual coolant level) if there is a pin sized hole in the tube that runs from the AST to the overflow tank, This is because if there is no vacuum to suck the coolant back from the overflow tank into the system, it stays in the overflow tank - giving the appearance of having a full coolant system (if you check it at the overflow with the dipstick) when infact your coolant system is low and all your coolant is in your overflow tank because of the lack of vacuum causing coolant not to get sucked back into the engine block etc
