I replaced the light bulb in my security light with a similar part from a Miata. The Mazda parts guy could not find a number for the RX-7 light, but recognized it as being similar (it wasn't exactly the same) to one from a Miata. It has worked fine for over two years now, and only cost $3 or so.

I don't see any harm in removing these -- they are just indicator lights after all. You won't know when the factory alarm is on, or if an exhaust system overheat is detected, but that probably isn't a big deal. The exhaust system overheat is pretty basic anyway -- it just measures the temp in the floor above the exhaust system. Presumably it only goes on when the main cat gets clogged or some other condition that would probably have other obvious symptoms.

The PowerFC uses the exhaust system overheat light to indicate other conditions, though, like overboost and possibly other things.

Replacement lamp for security

I looked in my service manual and found that the lamps for the foglamp illumination, and exhaust over temp and security are of the same wattage. I found a dirrect replacement at radio shack and did not have to buy a new one from the dealer. I'll have to look and see if I can find the number again as i let it in a post on this forum some time back. It's not hard to take the indicator apart and remove the lamp and replace it. It is however very small. If anyone has concerns about doing it them selves I'd be happy to do it. Just send me the indicator and I'll install the lamp and send it back...cost would be shipping and cost of the lamp. This also goes for the rocker switches (fog lamp, or defroster)
