Opinion needed on Black 93 Touring with 67k miles
The car is completely stock, and is owned by someone who knows nothing about the car and was taken to the dealershop for service. They are asking 11k and they are taking it in for a compression check tomorrow at my request. She has a bad case of the 3k hesitation also. Her tach also seems to bounce a little at idle, but it idles fine. The interior does look very nice in the pics, and the paint doesn't look bad. The front bumper looks like it is a little warped on the left side, but I have heard that's fairly normal. It also has a couple dings here and there, nothing major though. I am sure I could talk down the price somewhat. Please let me know your opinions on whether I should look at this car seriously. I would have to fly out there to see it and I don't want to waste money to see a car that won't last another 10k miles. Here are some pictures Black 93 Touring Thanks

If compression is good, i think 11k is a pretty good price considering that the interior and exterior are in decent condition. Some people have claimed that the power FC will take care of that 3k hesitation

Please, I need some opinions. Results from the compression test are coming back tomorrow and I need to know whether I am going to book a flight out there. What do you guys feel would be acceptable to good compression. Thanks

ok, i was hoping someone with more mechanical expertise than me would chime in about the turbos and such but since you are in a hurry, ill say what i think.
For compression, i think you are looking for something around 8 or so on each rotor face for both rotors. That's six 8s. If the lady who drives the car doesnt know much about taking care of it, then she may not know about the need to cool down turbos properly, but then again it doesnt sound like she seems like the type to drive the car very hard either. You might want to ask her about that but I dont personally know of a quick way to check the turbo health other than maybe hooking up a boost gauge real quick and taping it to the windshield to see if they give normal boost levels. Even if they do, which would be a 10-8-10 pattern, I really dont know what, if anything that tells you about their long term health.
I still think 11k is a good price for the car assuming no major problems come up with compression or boost but i guess you will have to go with your gut instinct about how the car has been treated based on what you know about this woman. Good luck, sorry i couldnt help you any more than that.

I doubt it would test in the 8s, only if I am really lucky. Since it does have 67k miles on it I am assuming it will be somewhere in the 7s. What would be the worst compresssion that would still be worthwhile to buy? Thanks

If its a lady selling it and they live in a decent sized house... try and find out if she has a kid... she could be selling the car for her leadfooted son... people have a tendency to buy a sportscar from a dumbfounded lady with less concerns than a 18yr old kid... its all in the tactics...

Compression test came back with 85psi average, the minimum from the book should be 100 psi. Now what, I am guessing it would need a rebuilt very soon. What should I do? Thanks

Ask the dealer what the biggest pressure split is. An 85 psi average is no good if you have 5 chambers at 100psi and 1 chamber at 0psi . The shop manual initially said 100psi minimum but was revised later to read 85psi minimum, although either way you are a bit low. FWIW, 85psi corresponds to ~6.0kg/cm^2. If it is 85psi and pretty even, you might still be ok, it could just be a lot of carbon buildup that needs to be cleaned out (try searching for "ATF Trick", this can also be done with water). More importantly, how does the engine run? Does it start up easily? Does it smoke? How does it sound? The hunting idle could be a lot of things but is it smooth? Also check the service records and look at the bottom of the car to check for leaks. The person may not know anything about it, but when he/she takes it to the dealer for oil changes the techs will often write comments on the service record. He/she may also have complained about a problem in the past and "forgotten" about it, but the service record may reveal this. For $11k you are still doing pretty well even with the low compression. It is a low mile car, if the interior and exterior are new looking, thats worth a lot more than a new engine imho. Definitely go see it in person if you can, the pics rarely show much, they tend to make bad cars look ok and great cars also look ok.
