oil question, not dino debate

I know, we're all tired of the dino debate, and i'm not meaning for this to sound like one. I just got my rex last week and am going through the basic stuff to make me familiar with where its maintenance is at and right now i'm about to change the oil. My shop told me not to use synthetic, but then suggested that I use Redline oil. I'm not sure if he just slipped and said it on accident though, b/c he had just explained to me the reasoning behind not using synthetic in a rotary. I had been planning to use Royal Purple, but think I'm going to lean towards Redline, however, again, I'm not sure if synthetic is really the way to go after what he explained to me. He's out of the shop for the week, hence me asking here and not calling him back. Has anyone used Redline oil before, or experienced a lot of buildup and smoke as a result of using synthetic?

heh, i searched b4 work, but guess i should've searched after work too.. so what did you do to take care of the leaks? I have a cym r1 with 56k miles that has been babied for the past 10 yrs by the previous owner.. so i'm not thinking that this is in the "high" mileage category yet..

For a turbo charged rotary engine, 56k = high mileage. If the car has been running dino oil the entire time, I wouldn't recommend changing now.

As for the leaks, I had them all fixed (which was a bunch of labor charges for various gasket replacements all around the engine). It was a Pontiac Sunfire so it wasn't too expensive to have done.
