OEM Wheel Recondition

I've read here that some of the first gen guys use paint stripper to prep their wheels for repainting.

I also have read that some 3rd gen guys are just ruffing the original paint and then respraying.

Has anyone who 'just' scuffed the original paint have any more input? Are you still happy with the way they turned out?

BTW, is it absolutely necessary to remove the tires? Ir can they just be masked? I see no reason to paint the wheel interior under the tires.
