OEM Engine coatings & plating
OEM Engine coatings & plating
searching around i see alot of different topics about coatings. OEM and aftermarket coatings.
There wasn't one thread that had everything i was lookin for so here it is.
What coatings did mazda use for the FD on the irons, housings and rotors.
and what chemicals or processes could harm these coatings?
are the coatings still benefitial even for a 50k engine?

the irons are pretty simple, from 68-78 the irons are just cast iron with a coat of paint on the outside. easy to spot these, they are black painted
from the start of Rx7 production they Nitride the irons, which is grey in color. it offers much better wear resistance AND lower friction.
the rotors get a cold cad plating*, the 81? and later rotors get a "soft material" coat between the side seal and rotor face, it helps to seal up the space between the side seal and rotor face, usually this coating is gone by the time we open the engine, so no idea what it is.
the 2009+ Rx8 rotors got a black coating on the rotor faces to keep carbon from sticking, no official word on what the coating is.
the rotor housings have had various chrome platings over the years, from the turbo 12A they have settled on a pinpoint micro channel plating (MCP) to help retain oil.
for the FC in 85 they added a fluorocarbon coating for break in, and the FD and Rx8 got a teflon coating. this coating is to ease the break in of the seal to the housing.
and that is it for the factory coatings.
*i've always been told its a cadmium plating, although looking at different platings on the internet it could be zinc, or something else, its hard to tell, they look the same
