odor question

First of all, I have a *completely stock* 05/92 build FD -- single owner when bought by myself about a month ago with 73k miles when purchased. That person's weekend car with only an average of 130 miles per week or so over 12 years...

Question is, after a couple of 7k rpm "accidental" revs I smelled what my (albeit weak) nostrils tell me is the smell of burnt rubber. The clutch was all the way in, though, and I was back down to 3500 rpms before shifting into gear. Could this be the smell of oil burning in the engine? It's not the smell of gasoline and I've called Mazda USA with the VIN number and was told the recalls had been done already (but that I couldn't get anything to prove that from them). Maybe a rubber hose getting so hot it's beginning to melt where it meets the metal? Is this normal at all?

Our '94 has this smell too, after long freeway driving, but it's not from under the hood... I'm thinking on or around the catalytic converter, but not sure. The tires don't seem too warm, and can't locate the source of "burning rubber" there, anyway. What rubber parts on this car that are not in the engine compartment are likely to get hot?

Check your belt. Something could possible be rubbing up against it while it spins fast. I have had this problem before but not on a 7.

i think i narrowed the smell down to my clutch. i was feathering too much on the highway. Try to be a bit more liberal with it on the highway i guess. otherwise, i have no clue what it could be
