Odometer Problem

Just the other day my odometer lcd panel on my 94 3rd gen stopped displaying the mileage and figured the panel had just burned out, called mazda to see if I could just get a new one, and they are trying to tell me that I will need a brand new odometer system and that my mileage is lost and will have to be recorded in good faith. This troubles me because my 3rd gen only has 40k original miles on it. Anybody know if this information is accurate?

Are you certain the odometer is in fact not working or is the bulb merely out? If it's only the bulb the display will look blank until in very bright sun; then you'll notice the faint ghosts of the numerals. If you can make out anything very faintly you merely need new bulbs.

Last night when i was in it I did notice that there was a glow from a bulb i'm assuming around the edge of the lcd panel - that is bad i'm guessing? Went outside to try and see if i could see the ghost images, too gloomy out to tell
