Odometer?

I just bought a roller a few weeks ago and I hooked up the battery and noticed that the odometer didn't show anything; just an orange backlight square. The car has no ECU; would this be the reason?

Yep, if you have the ECU and harness out of the car, the odometer won't work. I think there's a ground somewhere that it wants.

If you want to go for it, dig out the shop manual and see how that circuit is run - you can probably find a way to give it what it needs so it lights up.
