OBX Differentials
I figured there would be a discussion about these already but my searches produced no results.
So what's the deal with the OBX torsen diffs offered on eBay? Any good as factory replacements? stronger than oem?
Obviouslly you have to step back for a second and question the quality because of the brand name, but recently it seems OBX has been attempting to improve their brand image. Their diffs hold up in the Honda circles, not sure to how much power though.

I'm interested too.. I still have more drivetrain clunking than I want and it appears to be coming from the diff. I'm not eager to replace it with another used, unknown quantity diff or pay Mazda prices for a new one.

obxracingsports.com doesn't provide any information about them, of course it doesn't seem to have been updated since 2002 so maybe that's why. Kind of makes you weary of the warranty service they would provide.
If they offer a decent warranty I might be inclined to give them a try, but more than likely they are lower quality than OEM. Although it's probably adequate for a stock power level replacement.

The stock Torsen diff is a very good diff. It will hold a hell of a lot of power and will transfer power better during cornering than the clutch-type diffs. The only weak point is drag-style launches. If it's that important to you, go with a TII diff or Kazz.
I wouldn't put that OBX crap in my car if it was free.

I would disagree. I dealer out OBX products (per requests) and the diffs are really the only things I would sell and even put in my own car.
They make very good diffs that are very strong and will hold up to a lot of hp and tq. They basically take the same design as quaife and replicate it and the only reason for the price is that they manufacture theirs in china with cheaper labor vs quaife that makes their in europe I believe.
I give OBX a thumbs up on their diffs though. It's about the only part I would recommend from them but it's well worth the money. Warranty is great and easy to get parts taken care of. Not sure how many rx-7's are running with them but I do know some hondas and chrysler cars putting down around 600hp or so and have no problems with breakage yet.
We got OBX to manuf. some for the members of the neons.org community and they have gone over extremely well with no problems as of yet and it's been a year to a year and a half later with almost 100 units sold.
From a dealers standpoint I say they are worth the money and you will be pleased with it.
The TII diff is a great diff as it sits so you could go that route as stated above as well.

Torsen is not ideal for drag racing. While it is a very efficient unit for other applications such as road racing, it does not have the capability to withstand shocks like a clutch type diff.
if youre not running slicks then traction will break before the rear. i killed one but i drive like a complete ***. im gonna try to go with royal purple or redline and see how my stockee holds up with 2 bar on street tires. i only plan on running big boost over 80 mph so i should be ok, dont fix it till its broke.
I disagree. I snapped one on the street on street tires during a hard shift to 2nd racing Vosko. When it goes its catastrophic. It will usally crack the case and take the ring and pinion gear with it.
