not to sound like a total newbie but...
I've read all about the 3 mod rule and how some people dont believe it and some live by it but I have a little different scenario. As of now my 93' RX-7 w/ 37000 miles is basically stock besides an aluminum AST. Now, basically what I really care about is reliability since I am a college student and dont have too much money. My question is...If I put a DP and exhaust on my car am I in danger of overboosting? My goal is not all out performance but rather an RX7 that runs nicely with not too much cash dumped into the motor. If I am in danger of overboosting what can I do to prevent this without buying a PFC/Stand alone. BTW, I am also about to install a boost guage and water temp gauge. Any recommendations?

as long as you have the Stock Cat in place you probably will NOT have any boost problems The stock Boost control system can be adjusted by changing the PILLS or addition of a Mechanical controler like the Daws Device

With a FULL Exhaust (ie No Cat) you will most likley need to PORT the WASTEGATE (requires dissassembly of the turbos) in order to adequitally control boost even with an aftermarket boost control and/or stand alone ecu.
Running my mods I have no problems w excess boost, the stock system still matains a 10-8-10 pattern unless its cold then I get 11-10-12

Usually you'll be fine with a downpipe and catback as long as you are keeping the stock cat converter. The real test will be when you hook up a boost gauge and see how you are doing.
The 3 mod rule really applies to air flow (intake, downpipe, catback, midpipe, intercooler, etc). If you really want, you can get a boost controller, but I doubt you'll have a problem keeping the boost under controll with just those two mods.
Every car is different, so before you do any mods, hook up the boost gauge. Make sure the car is working at the stock boost level and then start modding. This way you'll have a base to start with.
Good luck!

Also, if you're REALLY only worried about reliability, then just install the downpipe. Leave the stock exhaust on there. Now that is completely safe. What you don't want to do is remove the main cat or open the intake in conjunction with the exhaust mods unless you are using a boost controller.
