Not Flowing...Air?

iv been trying to burp my coolant system for the past couple days, but it seems air just keeps getting in. i will fill it up, start the car and let it sit for a couple minutes, and the temp starts to rise HIGH so i turn it off. i let it cool then open up the cap and fill it up, but it just never seems to end. i did this for 2 days, and both days the engine got flooded from what im guessing is from starting it so much. the coolant doesnt seem to be flowing through the system, because the rad. hoses and rad. itself do not get warm. im guessing this could be a thermostat problem but every so often it seems to flow through. also when i let it run for a little, alot of coolant fills into the AST causing it to leak out of the overflow tank. is there somewhere that air is gettin in or is there another problem...also i just hooked up an aftermarket temp gauge in the TB coolant hose, and the gauge doesnt read at all...so why is the coolant not flowing and why is it overflowing into the AST
