Non seq boost issues. LAG!

i have converted the twins on my FD to non sequential. all the solinoids and wires gone and everything blocked off with block off plates. i have a aftermarket intercooler (XSpower) and a NGR type-s BOV.

im having some issues with boost

first off my max boost is 4-5 psi but if i kink the line (cheap boost control lol) then it can got to about 11psi, but still lags like crazy.

next, it takes up to about 5-6k rpms to build that boost. ive checked for leaks. my intercooler pipes are T-bolted on and they arent leaking. i have all new vac lines and i sealed every plate on my manifold with silicon.

there is one plate on my Y-pipe that i need to silicon but ill do that and see if there is any improvment but i doubt it

any ideas are welcome! thanks

you have massive boost leaks in the system or turbos that are taking chunks out of the turbine/compressor housings. do the tests again or double check that you did remove or wire everything open correctly. if you have a secondary turbo building boost that isn't making it past the Y-pipe for example then you know why it isn't spooling properly.

the air is going somewhere or it just isn't being generated, think simple and look at it again.

you can make a tester from home depot for about $20.

Your BOV might have taken a ****.

Or boost controller
Or like stated massive boost leak
Or bad waste gate porting
Or blown engine (chipped apex seal)
Or ecu is not compensating (stock ecu? have you put resistors?)

my ECU is a power FC and i have checked all the boost settings.

i dont have a boost controller. so thats probably why the boost is so low, but doesnt explain the lag

i havent looked at the wastegate, maybe i will when i change the oi

l know how to make a leak tester, ill have to try that

im not sure on the compression but im sure its even compression so chipped seal is out

and my BOV is brand new, and adjusted so i know it holds boost. same thing with my old
BOV.

the intercooler isnt the issue, my old one was leaking because i got a huge improvement in response over the stock one

my guess is something before the intercooler leaking like the y-pipe.. im not so sure what has been done to the turbos as far as the wastegate so i would like to check that out

There was a time when I could only get 8 psi max boost. I double checked my hoses and everything looked fine. After inspecting everything else and not fixing the problem, I finally removed all of the lines and bent them to see cracks. What do you know, the CRV hose revealed a crack only when put under pressure.

when i had my engine out to reseal the oil pan i made sure the no vac hose was reused. i replaced ALL of the vac lines with silicon lines from hosetechniques.com and i still had this problem. all of the vac lines are still in great condition. all 5 feet of them haha. also i replaced all of my vac caps with teflon ones and zip tied them.

Try turning of the sequential turbo option in the Pfc settings/ try having the waste gate control solenoid hooked up for for boost control.

Honestly, its a trial and error for boost issues. Let us know what you find.

ok so, non seq is turned off in the PFC. and i dont have the wastegate control solenoid, or still have the connector for it. ive completely disconnected the wastegate and the lag is still there but i can hit 12psi

you still have a boost leak or the turbos are working against each other, ie dumping boost. take the time and make a pressure tester. i have been building these cars for some time and i still don't trust the sheer amount of piping in the FD system to not overlook something minor that can cause a major leak in the system, like a pinched o-ring in the y-pipe or slit hose to the IC or a blown off hose at the y-pipe nipple. no matter how much you think the lines are secure they find ways of popping off or blowing out seals.

you just don't realize how much force is on the system at 12PSI until you start blowing off lines left and right..

had this problem when i first converted. turned out i didn't tighten down y-pipe attachment to the secondary turbo. Once fixed i had full boost by 3.5k (cat installed)

just me make sure, is the precontrol flapper welded in the right position? or is it welded closed???

This relates to my personal experience... I have an aftermarket IC (M2 medium) with corresponding duct work, pipes, couplers, etc. When I consistently ran 13+psi boost on stockish turbos, I would pop a connection every once in a while (and not always the same one!). Now I run between 10-12 psi and it hasn't popped off yet. Of course, there are a lot of variables... Granted, I could probably improve some of the connection points (adding better beads to the pipes, higher quality couplers, etc.).

Blowing off lines aside, my car makes 10 psi around 3.7-4k rpm WOT, but I have a 3" exhaust...

precontrol is welded open according to your picture. your problems are coming from somewhere else.

tomorow ill have to run a boost leak test, ill just block off the y pipe ans see if thats leaking, my bet is that it is... if not ill test the manifold and intercooler.

i have another y pipe im cleaning up and ill reseal it, and make a block off plate. ill have to try and find some caps for the BOV nipples and seal them with silicon.. when im done with it it WILL NOT leak

ok so due to lazyness.. i havent run a boost leak test but instead i pulled off the y pipe and both gaskets had the rubber coating peeling off and they ware starting to rust on the outside.

i got all new vac caps and cleaned/poished the y pipe the best i could. i also got some rubber caps for the BOV nipples and siliconed them on there

the o ring was pretty worn down so i ordered a pack of 50 (cheaper than OEM replacment)
i ordered a pack of o rings that will fit the throttle body elbow, let me know if you want a few of them
also i ordered OEM replacement metal gaskets for the y pipe.

i swear the turbos spool up faster in the low end but the seals stilll wont hold boost at higher RPMs. also im only getting 4.5psi and its much more consistent. my guess is that my wastegate was ported or something so thats why im running lower boost. ill have to get a MBC from egay to test it out..

any recommendations for a MBC? (cant afford a EBC atm)

as far as the "butt dyno" goes it feels about 10-15HP faster

ill update this thread when i replace the gaskets

Get an electronic boost controller. Otherwise enjoy laggsville USA. I know from experience.
Also ported wastegate and full 3 inch exhaust. You'll be in boost between 3-4K. My car was making 10psi by 3.5K and I was running 14psi

ok lets see how much money i have right now.... $3... just a few dollars short of a EBC. im just going to get a MBC for pretty cheap. ive even blocked off the wastegate and it still lags. but thats before i started fixing leaks.

so either a MBC or i can get a stock restrictor pill. i wont be getting a EBC until i go single turbo so give or take 4 months or so.

im pretty sure a EBC isnt going to completely fix my problem. i could see a EBC having a 100-300RPM advantage over a MBC but not a 2000rpm difference by the time it takes to hit max boost

so far i have narrowed it down to 2 problems
either the wastegate is opening prematurly which doesnt make sence... i hooked a air compressor with exactly 10psi in it to the wastegate and it didnt budge until it hit 10psi, maybe there is some other reason why it would open

or... there is a boost leak that is preventing me from building boost. it could even be a combo of both wastegate issues and a leak.. so ill just get some cheap MBC to test it out. its either that or i just clamp the hose and risk blowing something up

please feel free to tell me what doesnt make sense jonny

If you did the non seq work, how bad was the cracking near the wast gate flapper? If it was excessive it wont hold boost.

Maybe a serious exhaust leak? Block to exhaust manifold gasket? How beat up was that and did you torque all the studs down?

If your really looking to just test if a mbc will work make your own through home depot. Search it up.

i didn't do any work to the turbos, so i didn't weld anything..

when i had the engine out i didn't take apart the turbos to look condition its in. although, there weren't any cracks on the manifold or exhaust housing of the turbos that i could see without taking them apart

the exhaust gaskets are in pretty good shape from what i can remember. there is still paint by the exhaust housing so i dont think it is leaking

im going to get a boost controller off ebay, its about $20 and according to some research the best one for that price.

what dont you understand by I HAVE NO MONEY, paying bills is hard enough, im not going to spend $500 on a damn EBC when a MBC will do just fine for now

Agreed, no sense in spending hundreds of dollars for diagnosis work.
Dont under estimate a quality MBC.

You should at least cancel out chipped apex seal by doing a fairly cheap comp. test with conventional tester. Make sure to take the valve needed to get results for each face.
