CA No Front License Plate?

I am from the Bay Area, and many of my friends and family have been getting tickets for not having front license plates.

The cops just recently started doing this around my area.

I have a 93 Touring with no front license plate location.

Has anyone gotten a ticket with their FD recently?

If so, what have you done to remedy not having the front license plate?

Considering that the car was not made to have a front license plate, I do not want to drill any holes or do anything that ruins the integrity of my car.

But that leaves me with the problem of parking with the worry of the cops ticketing me.

There is an oem bracket to hold the front plate.

I have never had a front plate on my FD (10 years in CA). Never been stopped or ticketed.

Where can I get that bracket?

Makes sense that you have not gotten one in 10 years, but these ticket incidents just started in the Bay Area within the last month.

And they are not just one or two people, it have been at least 5 or more that I know of within the last 3 weeks.

^ You can probably get it from MAZDA or make a WTB thread and someone should have one.

The Bracket mounts with 2 screws in the top of the radiator opening.

Do I need to make holes for the mount?

AFAIK they should be there, they are spaced about 6" apart.

I still think the coolest option is the Taka-Kaira flip-back plates. I got one in Japan back in 2003 but sold the car I installed it on...

It's spring loaded to "flip back" at about 50mph and higher...

Not sure where you can get them these days...

PS, that's not me in the photo. ha

And here I thought you were known for wearing muscle shirts .

OP, you can also go with the full '99 front end conversion, that's a much more expensive project though.

The stock bracket is a super simple bolt on. If you look at the top of the radiator opening you'll see the two bolt holes. Stock bracket just bolts right up, takes all of 5 minutes, no drilling/cutting/anything.

BTW, front license plates are SO dumb.

I've never had a front plate the whole time ive owned the car. The cops have followed me but never have pulled me over for anything and the cops in my area pull people over for a lot of stuff. As long as your not driving like an idiot I think you should be ok.

Pulled over twice...

1st time was a cop on a bike, did let me go
2nd time not so lucky

At that time I had a 93 bumper... 2nd time was enough for me to go to the hardware store to pick up some L-brackets to fab up a plate holder... only to have an idiot back into my car and wrinkle my plate and gouge my bumper...

Better to just have a front plate then give a cop a reason to pull you over.

I don't have a front plate on any of my cars. Usually, the cops will pull me over for speeding, and then note the lack of a front plate and give a fix-it ticket for those. Once my wife backed into a parking spot at a local park, and she came back to find a fix-it ticket.

For the RX, I think I found some front plate bracket on ebay and just put that on long enough to get the ticket signed off.

Is this near san jose area because that would suck. I was ticketed for reckless driving during thanks giving week, but the cop did not mention anything about the license plate.

Spoken like someone who lives in Florida and isn't required to have a front plate.
But some cops think it's dumb too.

Last two years running there's been legislation introduced in my State for front plate exemptions on "special interest cars". Defined much like collectible/antique cars. Some connected people in the Corvette Club/PCA are pushing it. It'll pass eventually and will cost an extra $50 a year, but worth it.

I don't run a front plate and have been pulled over a few times. I just pay the tickets. It’s just a fine and I don't get any points on my license.

Would something like this work?

http://swiftmotorsports.com/index.ph...oducts_id=1838

I really like the 99 plateless look but I live in MA and while I'll probably get away with it for a while, eventually... This looks like it could bolt right up to the under tray no?

If you got the motorized version you could just press a button after you're pulled over, and have it pop up while in the car. Police officer comes over to inspect your front, suddenly sees a plate -- total wtf moment

Most of the tickets that my friends have gotten have been in the san fran area, but my cuz got her ticket around the union city.

You are allowed to do that?
For some reason, I remember being told by someone that I was not allowed to do that....
I am going to do that then.

That is nice way to hide the license plate.

Is there a motorized version of that plate?

No, your not. Most states that require a front plate mandate that it be affixed to the FRONT of the vehicle, at a MINIMUM HEIGHT, LEVEL and not able to swing. Usually some wording prohibiting opaque coverings or affecting the reflectivity too. Whether it's enforced is another question.
Regardless, IMO a front plate laying on the dash makes the car look cheap and carries some danger in a collision.

How much do the tickets end up costing you, and how many have you gotten?

I don't run a plate and the bay area PD's have let me slide, cumulative 1.5-2yrs. The front plate is an excuse to pull you over to ring you out. Don't ride dirty.

Just got my "VC5200 - No Plates" $114 ticket today. Ironic thing is my trucks timing guide snapped off so I pulled the car out to the curb last evening to put my truck in the garage, not even 24 hours later I get home to find paper flapping on the windshield wiper. Really don't want a front plate...takes away from its good looks! May need a temporary fix lol...
