Next modification. DP? Intake? Both??

Guys,

Finally getting around to doing some more work on the RX7 and so recently I replaced the spark plugs and the wires. The car is running much better than it was before, no god awful white smoke or anything.

But now the car is running pretty rich, I realize that it's supposed to run rich, but this is very raw and rich.

So I was thinking, perhaps putting a DP or an intake or both would get more air going and lean the mixture a little bit. Am I on the right track?

Currently on the airflow side of things there's only a Cat-back Greddy 5" exhaust. The pre-cat and the main cat are still in stock form.

Would it be OK to JUST get the DP or just the intakes, or is it advisable to get both of them??

I was thinking of the Apexi system for the intake and M2 SS for the DP.

Any and all suggestions and comments welcome.

Please spend some time researching modification strategies.

IMO, a downpipe should be the first mod to an FD. The intake can wait. You may exceed the stock boost levels with a downpipe and cat-back, in which case you will need a boost controller (either electronic or manual). A boost gauge and water temp gauge are also musts.

If you have the situation where you are smelling fuel with the car running or sitting, you likely have a fuel leak in the engine compartment, WHICH IS VERY DANGEROUS! Do not drive the car if you can smell fuel in the engine compartment. Either determine the source of the leak or tow it to a rotary shop.

Get a boost & water temp gauge, so you know a little more about what is going on with your engine.

Then a downpipe & manual boost controller at the same time. Check your boost levels before installing an intake.

Already have the boost and water temp gauges. I bought the car with the Greddy already installed, which is why I was asking about the next step in the modification chart.

I know that the DP is very important to get done, and now I know that the boost controller goes along with it. I will look at both of those.

As far as the fuel smell, I will do some tests to try to narrow is down to exactly where I smell, where and how much of it.

Thanks for your comments thus far...

Thumbs up DP!

Get the DP....lowers underhood temps, quickens spool-up and boost response, and sounds cool too

First mod I ever did to my car several years ago.....the car at the time only had 30k miles and when I pulled the precat off it was already imploding on the inside....get rid of the thing!
