Newbie question

Hi all im thinking about getting a 3rd gen but i know that the rotary is notorious for breaking down due to the owner's laziness to change the oil......ok ive tracked some down, but what should i look for to know that the motor is still good, or that it is blown. also does anyone know any good shops and how much it costs to replace the motor? I live in the bay area, ca. thx alot!

one of the things to check if the engine is making the correct boost pattern , buy a boost meter and hook it up to a vacuum thingy, i forget off the top of my head. also check the tach to see if it idles properly. take a look at what color the exhaust is, you can tell by just color of the exhaust if your motor is running properly. do a search for your questions. m2 performance is a pretty good rotary shop located in concord. research alot more before you buy an fd.
