Newbie needs help on purchasing an RX-7

Aight fellas,

As of now I own a 1995 Toyota Supra (wait, wait don't start with the hating) Anyways, I've started to see one too many Supras around my way and i'm tired of everybody driving the same damn car that i'm driving so I was thinking about getting an RX-7.

Keep in mind that i'm still in school with a part time job, this is money that i've saved up. I found someone that is willing to sale ther's for 4600. It's a 1993 with 130,000 miles on it (give or take a few) I havn't ran the carfax yet but I was just curious how long these cars usually last (i'm not to familiar with them) is 130,000 miles at the end of it's life or do they go well within the 200,000 mile mark? I won't be using this to race (got others for that) I take extremely well care of all my cars so in your guys experience do you think that it would last me?

Thanks for any comments and if i'm not clear enough for anyone just let me know what you don't understand and I'll be happy to clear everything up for you, thanks.

Well the engines last about 80,000 mile (give or take on how it is driven) turbos have about a 30,000 mile also depends on the driving I believe.

My first Engine went out on me at 96000. miles and im still on the stock turbos.

So you are saying that it won't be operable after the engine goes. I just reffering to the turbos or the entire engine. I don't care if the turbos don't work. I just need the regular engine for everyday use. Don't care about the speed as of now (for the purchasing part anyway)

Any other comments guys?

Dgeeseman is in the process of writing a Newbie RX-7 Guide , here's the current version:

https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.php?t=354426

It's pretty complete, so please post back what things were helpful and what other questions you still have.

Thanks,

holy crap, more supras then fd's? where do you live becuase from stats, supras are 1/2 as common as fd's are. in anycase, if you sell the supra for above 18k which seems like its very possible if the trends continue and your car is in relative ok shape, you can easily afford to pay someone to rebuild the engine and stick a new turbo+tranny+clutch+true wideband+ecu+fuelsystem+tune as well as to do all reliblity mods and still have plenty enough extra to afford a kick *** body kit (full cf if you want) as well as a few extra goodies (perhpas a beater car/second car as well with a turbo?)

in anycase, cars dont have a millage where they all die, its how they were treated and how hard they were run. i have seen cars with only 16-20k on them run in to the dirt as well as 100k+cars in mint condition (well like new)

Thanks for the info guys. And I really planned on keeping my Supra, just bc it holds a lot of sentimental value for me, just didn't plan on driving it as much as I do now. Thanks for the replies and that link. I might hold off on it, not sure yet. Unless my grandparents hook me up (knock on wood).

After I totaled my 99 M3 coupe they were at a stand off with me about buying me cars until I begged and begged and finally they bought me the Supra which I did all the mods to (don't feel like goin' into that) Anyways, thanks again guys.
