Lightbulb Newbie here - some simple questions and a pic request...

Hey guys. I signed up here for that thread about the guy who got his "FD" stolen by another so-called friend.

Anyways, my questions are what is FD and FC and stuff?

And my pic-request would be for any RX7s without a rear spoiler or anything of the sort. mostly stock looking, maybe suspension and wheels? but mostly without a rear spoiler. I saw one once and I thought it looked very sharp.

Thanks. Great board and great cars.

The letter codes refer to body styles of the RX-7.
They are two letters out of the VIN.
FD is the 93-95 RX-7.
FC is the 86-91 RX-7. (there was no 92 model year.)
FB is 81-85.
SA is 79-80. (no body change, but the 17 digit VIN wasn't law then.)

We use these letters simply as an easy way to refer
to "generations" of the RX-7, the way a Supra guy might
say MKIII or MKIV.

SA/FB = 1st gen (79-85) RX-7
FC = 2nd gen (86-91) RX-7
FD = 3rd gen (93-95) RX-7

Here's a nice pic of a 93 RX-7 (FD) with the rare Competition Yellow Mica (CYM) paint available only in the R1 package - http://jrx7.rx7life.com/images/2002N...2NJBBQFD03.jpg

It came with the front and rear spoilers from the factory. Take a look around here on the forum and check the Newbie "stickied" thread at the top here for some more resources on learning about the cars. There are tons of pics around here, there's should be a gallery link at the top of your page, look around in there.

Thanks. Don't think I will ever own one though. For the fact that I don't think I will ever be that rich. Plus, you hardly ever get to see them here, let alone see them for sale. (Canada, eh? )

Sweet cars. Actually there are a lot of the umm... FB and FC style of cars around here for sale but I'm kind of weary about some of them. A lot of them have been riced out and I've heard about reliability issues. Plus they must be expensive to repair. The rotary engines are made by or designed by wankel, right? This is a german engineered engine? I was told by someone that it was first created for use in Volkswagen but because of the reliability, they were never used. I don't think this is true, but I dunno, I'm a newb and no nothing about the reliability of them.

If I were to purchase an FC model year, what would be the things I should look out for? Thanks again.

I've never owned one, but I've heard the FB's and FC's (except the Turbo II FC's) are very reliable. The FD engine is not very reliable. Do a search if you're interested in more info about reliability, there's tons of info on this board.

The rotary engine was first designed by the Germans, but Mazda engineered there own engine, initially starting with the current German engineering. The rotary engines in RX7s are completely engineered by Mazda. There's also a lot of info on the net about the history of Mazda and the rotary engine. Its a pretty interesting story; it should be easy to find with a search.
