New to the RX7, have a few battery related questions
Hi everyone,
My name is Mike, I'm from Las Vegas, Nevada.
I just picked up a 93 RX7 with 74k miles on it, and I'm looking for some help on my first little project. Well actually it was just a simple task now turning into a project.
basically I found that the car had a Kia battery in it and it seems backwards from normal batteries, the top posts were on the right side instead of the left when the positive terminal is facing the firewall. Anyway, I found this stock placement weird with a fuse box attached to it? Is this how it is supposed to look stock?? Also, if this is how it is supposed to look, what did you guys do to install other batteries with top posts on the opposite side. I bought a nice optima red top and I can't see anyway to put the terminals back on without doing some major re-wiring. Any help would be appreciated, pictures of what I'm talking about are attached below

After looking at the mess I have sitting in front of me, I'm really considering it. this poor car needs a lot of TLC from what I can see...
It seems I have an oil leak in two spots too. This can't be good, I'm getting under there tomorrow to see if I can find out what the deal is.

For now I'm going to just return the optima and try and find a battery with the posts on the other side. I'm sure optima has to have one like that, I'll go look elsewhere tomorrow.
I guess someone did mess with the stock battery though as I'm missing the cover and a lot of the fuse holder is exposed instead of covered by the stock red rubber, and the top of it is missing. This is going to be fun....

The Optima battery will work. The small fuse box does not need to hang off the side, just bend it flat so that it sits on top of the battery. I have ran mine this way for 3 years now on my Optima. Also make sure your neg. will reach.
If there is nothing wrong with the Kia battery, it will work just fine too. A lot of guys go to that size of battery(51R) for more room.
BTW, every simple task on an RX-7 turns into a project

HAHA I've noticed. I'm going to ditch this optima though and get another one, with the reverse posts. I didn't realize that was how the battery sat when I picked up the battery, so I'm just going to return this one and find one with the reverse posts. The kia battery is working, but it died on the long trip here while they were shipping the car, and then it died again when it was sitting in the shippers lots after they unloaded it. So I'm thinking it is time to replace it, because they put it on a charger and that didn't fix the problem.

I just returned the battery and unfortunately they didn't have the reverse post battery there. So I just ordered one from Summit, it will be here in a couple of days. The funny thing is the price with shipping was less than what I paid for the battery in the parts store in town

Yeah I just went through this situation a few months back. This is the story the optima battery that you want is the 35R or 34R I think. The R is more expensive then the regular 34/35 battery. The reason I got straight from optima is that the terminals are reversed. I have one and it fits fine. Most people don't spend the money and place the battery backwards and run the cables across the battery. Hope this helps. Oh yeah I just had and audio shop give me a small piece of 4 guage wire to extend the positive terminal to clear the battery.
