New to the 'rex, wanting to buy one...

'Lo guys ! This is my first post on these forums, although I've been reading alot of interesting stuff here lately !

I currently own an '86 VW GTi, and have been for a year... Now I'm drooling on something faster , better looking, and with better handling (my GTi handles like its on rails, so I doubt that I'll experience enormous improvements on that area)! And so, I've fallen in love with the RX7FD... I'm interested in knowing how what I can expect to spend on the car to be able to drive it nearly every day (I'm counting on borrowing my dad's car almost whenever I like) !

I earn about 1900$ a month after taxes (I'm only 19 years old with no education.. yet), and after expences and bills I've got 1500$ left to spend on gas, maintenance and actually be able to buy myself a beer from time to time. (100$ on insurance, and 300$ on the loan). I guess I'll have like 600$ left to spend on the car every month, if I'm being realistic (having a social life, and actually being able to drive the car from time to time).

Here's the terms: I'm importing a car from Japan... It's got a rebuilt engine (the guy who's importing it for me will be rebuilding the engine as soon as I get it), so I guess I don't have to worry about them seals blowing on me. Most of the cars in question are mildly tuned (to ~320-330bhp's, which isn't alot since I'm buying a Type-R (or whatever it's called. I know Type-R is a Honda trademark The one with two oilcoolers, alcantara seats, and like 280bhp's from factory)), and so I hope that the reliability mods has been done.

Also, I'll make sure to always have around 3000$ in reserve in case something expensive blows ! The winters here in Norway are quite harsh, and so it'll have to sleep in the garage for like 1/2 of every year, and in wintertime, I'll use a crappy car to get by...

I'll only keep the car for about two years, before I go to college..

So, what I'm wondering about, is this possible ? I'm used to using a wrench (as I mentioned, I currently drive a GTi, and I've been doing a lot of stuff on it, all of it by myself), so "normal" repairs won't be a problem.. I'll also keep the car as stock as possible, except from the "normal" mods (exhaust, intake and so on). Nothing hardcore ! So I guess it'll be alot cheaper maintaining it. But still, is it possible to maintain such a "fickle" car as an RX7 ?

Sorry for the bad english, you know I'm Norwegian and all

I know you guys hate newbs who don't search. But I've searched, over and over again. All those posts tell me is what will go wrong, what's probably gonna go wrong, and so on, what I'm wondering about is "Is it likely that I can afford keeping an RX7 FD in running condition?".

Thanks though...

I am interrested in a FD myself too though.
BUT! There is some factors to overcome.
I am unsure if you have driven Front engine Rear wheel drive cars before?
remember that an RX7 is easy to spin out with (Power over) in corners unless you are careful.

Again, I can't tell your experience on driving FR cars.
Also it will require maintance of you, the worst part is, when the rebuild comes, thats the most costy part when owning a RX7.
Just remember, RX7 is a good machine, as long as you treat it right, it will treat you right as well.

by the way, you ain't the only Norwegian on this forum, but I tend to just read and use my username to search

I've driven FR cars before (several BMW, a couple of Ford Sierra's, and a couple of Volvo 240's), never owned one though... But none of the FR cars I've driven before even compares to an RX7 when it comes to engine ! so I'll have to be careful if I buy one...

I'll be sure to keep 20 000nok on a savings account in case I need to rebuild... Or something else really expensive blows. I guess I'll buy one ! It costs like 200 000NOK (25-30k$) with rebuilt engine, comverted to left hand drive, ready to go I can always sell it for around 250 000NOK (~40k$) if I find out that I can't afford maintaining it !

Nice to see I'm not the only norwegian here Are you on bilforumet.net ?
