new,old 93 rx-7 touring

Hi, I am new to the forum. I just purchased a 1993 RX-7, silver, touring edition with black leather interior. My wife and I have owned an '83 GSL RX-7 for 18 years and finally decided to upgrade to a '93. The car is in perfect condition, still smells like new when you open the door. I would expect no less since the car only has 13,000 original miles on it. Believe It! The only modification that was done was to install a turbo-timer. My wife wants to add the rear spoiler, so we purchased one from a company on-line, but I should have known better not to order one painted, since it looks to be about two shades darker than the rest of the car. Also, I biggest problem is that when you set it on the rear hatch the two center pedestals do not set flat. The person I am dealing with says that is normal. But I am thinking even if you can manage to get the holes in the right position when you tighten the screws - is the spoiler going to pull down or is the metal going to bend up? Anyway, if anybody has had any experience in installing one of these I would appreciate the help. Also, if anybody knows of a company that makes one of these spoilers that fits correctly I would appreciate the info. Thanks for listening, we love our new RX-7. Every place we go people think it is a new car and ask what it is. Zoom, zoom, zoom...........

welcome to the club I would imagine that the wing is going to bend the hatch if it dosent fit correctly, Which wing did you get?

Also you should do the reliability mods if you plan on driving the car much, but the aftermarket ast is kinda a must. Take care of her and enjoy

The fibreglass, will bend a bunch, and the metal will bend very little.. if you're talking about the '93-'95 Stock Wing... I haven't attached a '99 wing yet...

The '93 wing has some rubber pads, and needs silicone around the holes when you put the bolts through so it won't leak water, and you need rubber/metal washers so that the spoiler doesn't sqweak like mad...

yes it's a stock wing. When i looked at the receipt it said hyper wings, com, although that wasn't the name of the company that i ordered it from. When i went to that website i believe it was for dealers only and used the same part number. Thanks for your help.

Welcome to the forum, and congrat's on your purchase. I had an 82 GSL that I bought new in Jan 82. Sold it in April of last year after buying the 94 FD in Jan. The FD has been a true pleasure to own. I hope you enjoy yours. You may want to do a search on turbo timers. Many owners, including myself, agree that letting the car sit and idle before shutdown is a bad idea. Basically, the engine just gets hotter when it idles, which is the opposite of what you are trying to accomplish.

Oh yeah....... the wing. Do you really want to drill holes in your nice new car? They look really nice without a wing.

Where in Ca are you, and how much was the car?

Yes, I have heard alot of talk about these cars having high temperatures under the hood. This may sound funny but after driving a half hour of so I felt the hood and it is not even warm to the touch. So I opened the hood and the engine carpartment wasn't really that hot. As far as the wing goes it is my wife's idea not mine, and she is the one who drives the car most of the time. I drive a '72 Corvette and a 6-speed, 2003 Tiburon GT. I know - it is a Hyundai, but actually it is a pretty nice car. I guess we are neighbors, I live about 25 miles south of you. We paid 17 K for the car.

Welcome. got any pics of the car? I would recommend getting the few upgrades for the motor to make it that much more reliable and keep under hood temps down

Also welcome to the club. Wow, I thought I was probably the only one around that was old enough to say he bought a 1st gen. new.
Re: your wing. If this is after market, it sounds like a bad fit. I would suggest checking out the parts wanted/for sale section and looking for OEM. In any event, you may also need to up-grade your hatch shocks. Your touring MAY not be strong enough with the extra weight. I think the R1 hatch shocks were a little stronger/stiffer. Good luck and have fun. Great car!

Thanks everybody for the great welcome. I bought the spoiler from wings plus, although when i got the bill it was from hyper wings. The main reason i bought it from this company is that the ad said " USED BY DEALERS AS SUGGESTED ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT FOR BEST FIT " NUFF SAID! Good advice about the hatch struts. Hopefully it won't need them the spoiler doesn't really weigh that much. If i recall correctly when i went to get some for the 83 you had to take out a second on your house!

If a dealer suggested it, I'd stay the hell away from it! :P

Seriously, though, since you're new, maybe you haven't read yet: stay away from the dealers! Don't worry, there are some rotary specialists around that know how to cater to your new baby.

Oh, welcome and congratulations! Maybe we'll see each other around!
