new member, newly bought 7!

New to thread, new to rx-7's =) I was considering an 8 for some time, so I've done my homework on rotaries. Here's the car I bought...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...ME:B:EOAB:US:6

Got a couple questions for anyone..

1) what viscosity oil should I use, and how much?

2) when changing out the tranny and differential, what brand and type of fluids should I use?

3) how much is stock psi for each turbo?

aaaand that's all I can think of for now, thanks!

Nice car and welcome to the club.

To answer your questions:
1. 10w30
2. I use redline MTL and gear oil.
3. 10 lbs of boost, but not sure since you have a G-force ECU. I would sell that and go with a Power FC.

Great looking FD3S. Congrats.

Safety First:
I can't really tell by the photo, but if the 3-point safety harness is connected to the rear strut bar, Do not use it. It will not hold you (Driver) in a frontal impact. The Strut Bar will bend or possibly break off. Hope you still have the OEM setabelt in place. If so, USE IT until the safety harness is properly secured.

There are a few aftermarket RSB's that can be used in conjunction with a 3 or 4 point safety harness. AND there are other ways you can install the Safety Harness to make it work as it was intended, therefore, much safer.

Welcome to the World Of The Rotary.

Welcome to the forums and a bit of advise until you understand all of the modifications and parts on the car drive it gentle. I don't know much about the G-Force ECU but if it has fixed fuel maps you may foul your plugs turning your boost down to stock levels.

Good news is you have a highly qualified shop in the area (well 1.5 hours away) and that can save you tons of heartache (working on cars is fun but troubleshooting idiosyncrasies when you don't do it every day is just frustrating and your time to isolate usually sucks ).

VERY IMPORTANT!

That harness is EXTREMELY unsafe.

Thanks for all the replies and info =) I have paid for the car, but will actually pick it up next week. I'll check the reliability of the harness. If this supposed racecar driver/mechanic used it, you'd think he would know better.

My friend has a buddy who sells Amsoil, so I'll use that for the engine and tranny, and just gear oil for the dif? I'll do the coolant as well....anything else worthy of a flush? I'd rather not do brakes or PS unless they need it.

Fuel filter, spark plugs and possibly some injector cleaner. See if the owner has records of when that stuff was changed and when the injectors were last checked. If they don't have good records for swapping plugs/fuel filter every 15k you might want to even have injectors pulled and cleaned.

RX7Store carries a proper harness bar that is a direct bolt-in replacement of the stock rear strut bar. Even with that said (good catch guys on looking at the photos for him) the Y harness with single attachment are junk. Tons of places you can order a good 4 or 5 point harness from for not much money (if the stock seatbelt is gone).

Awesome, you guys are a lot of help =) I use my dads truck right now while he uses his mini =P I'd like to keep it that way and just have the Mazda as a recreational vehicle. I'm a big tuner freak, and a mechanic in the national guard, so I'll try and take immaculate care of it so I can have some resale value.

I was amazed at how hard it is to find these cars, and in good condition. There was one w/in 12 miles of here I went to check out, and some guy from like 300 miles away got to it before me. People are crazy over these things.

An additional comment on that harness, dont use it without a roll cage. A harness is designed to keep you seated straight up and down. In the event of a rollover and the roof crushing you will get smashed pretty flat. The stock seatbelts allow you to lay to the side when the roof pushes you down. A roll cage will prevent the roof from collapsing and make it safe to use the harness( once it is securely fastened)

Anyone have any good jacking points on the car to raise it up w/o damaging anything? Also, any good writeups on changing oil....tranny....diff? I'm familiar with all of them, just curious if it's different with this car.

Jack up the front at the crossmember just behind the plastic underpan. BE VERY CAREFUL -- the oil pan is just behind the crossmember. Jack up the rear at the pumpkin. You can put jack stands under the chassis rails at the sides of the car or under the crossmembers -- use blocks of wood or heavy towels on the stands.

Everything you will ever need to know about this car is contained, in detail, on this website. Read the entire thing. It will take some time, but every 3rd gen owner must do so if you plan on knowing your car.
