new fd's in the us...? anyone interested?

As some of you may have seen from my thread in the for sale section, I have a friend who imports stuff from japan, ie that skyline... i was wondering if anyone would be interested in like a 99 rx-7 or something... i figured it wouldn't hurt to ask him.... just wanted to see if there was really anyone willing to pay for one... i've asked him to look into the cost.... he'll get back to me when he finds out... just want to see the general interest.

I'm working on the same thing, except with all this bitching and complaining about the cost of 93-95s, I doubt that people will shell out $40,000+ for a 99 spec FD.

RotaryKnight. Why did you decide not to get one? Im sure there is a big piece Im missing but I found a jdm banthust r for $10000 american with very low miles and mint condition. I have a connection in japan for parts and cars. Now I know its a butt load to bring one to the us but if you know motorex, what did they tell you to steer you away? Kinda curious

My friend was wanting to import a skyline and it's a bitch. The car was only like $10k US, but customs wont let it in w/o US spec conversions ie. airbags, smog stuff, and some other stuff. was gonna end up costing around 30k. it really got out of hand.

ideas for importing...

would it be possible to remove the engine over in japan and send the 2 (car and engine) seperatly, then reassemble here?

would it be possible to ship them into canada/mexico and just drive over the border?

would it be possible to put fake airbags and a huge catalytic converter on so it would pass emmisions and look like it had A/B's?

just some ideas...

to answer your questions...

i heard it may be possible to ship the motor seperate but not sure..
if you ship to canada or mexico youll have to use fake plates to get across border and if your caught.......

when they inspect the car theyll know if the stuff is fake....i wouldnt count on it working

Ok, new Skylines go for $80k+ from MotoRex.. Just take what the converted price would be for a new one (what, around $30k USD).

So you can imagine a new FD, probably around $65-70k once they can get it passed customs.

Well, this is the info I got. If I send them from Japan to somewhere "undisclosed" just for my copy right, then send them to the states, there is no inspection. Due to the fact is the Undisclosed location is a US teritory and they have no emissions, or anything like that laws. Then when it comes to Cali or where ever, its legal, it would be like bringing a car from Florida to Cali...
Cool huh?

P.S. I had a friend that did this with porsche, mercedes and BMW

you could try getting it imported as a "show car only". If you can pull that off I'm pretty sure you get around customs.

Actualyl that sounds plausable. My mom's husband (yeah divorced when I was a kid) builds kit cars, and that is what he does to get around many regulations. He builds everything in Sounth Africa, where he is from, and then ships it here in parts, and puts it together.

I'm not sure of the details but I remember him saying that he had to do that to get around various laws.

Besides I think that 2000-2002 RX-7 can pass US laws for the most part casue Mazda was thinking about importing them again, but decided not to for marketing reasons. They have airbags at least.

You said that if you get the car imported to Canada and drove it across the border...

Why would this be a good idea does Canada have much less strict laws?

I IMed my friend at motorex for some info....it's brief but he was busy. I did change his AIM so that no one starts bothering him.

HKS FD3S: hey quick question
Motorex dude: yep
HKS FD3S: some guys on the forums think its so easy to import a rhd fd
HKS FD3S: gimmie some quick reasons why it isn't
Motorex dude: what year is the car ?
HKS FD3S: think after 95
Motorex dude: the thing is that mazda says rhd and left hand drive are not substaincially simiar
Motorex dude: similar
Motorex dude: and 1996 and newer need OBD II for emissions
HKS FD3S: ahhh ic
Motorex dude: it might as well be an FD and a honda
HKS FD3S: ic
Motorex dude: you would have to crash test them
HKS FD3S: oh fun
Motorex dude: to make it legal
Motorex dude: importing it - or exporting it is easy
Motorex dude: making it legal is the trick
HKS FD3S: ok
Motorex dude: I will giv eyou some sites
HKS FD3S: ok cuz they think it's soooo easy
Motorex dude: http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/import/
Motorex dude: tell them to look at the vehicle eligibility list
HKS FD3S: now what if the car is a rhd 93-95
Motorex dude: and look at the FMVSS booklet
HKS FD3S: ahhh
Motorex dude: still dot
HKS FD3S: thanks dude
Motorex dude: lots more stuff too
Motorex dude: but if they want to argue - they can talk to me - give them my email address
HKS FD3S: what's the email
HKS FD3S: the xxxxxxx one?
HKS FD3S: cuz then they'll have your aim you don't want that
Motorex dude: its all the same once I answer it
HKS FD3S: true but you don't want them to aim you either
Motorex dude: but sales @ skylinegtr.com
HKS FD3S: ok that's better

if that's not a concern then it's ok...but for those people who want to actually street drive the FD then it will be a huge problem.

What are you planning to do with the car? Just garage it forever or trailer it around? Once you get caught on the street the local police will impound it for no registration, then the government will seize it and say bye to all your money.

You'll care if you try to register it. Or when the cop pulls you over for having plates on it that aren't registered to the car...

Basically, you can't legally get an 96+ FD here into the US without crash testing it and doing all the other stuff that MotoRex has done for the Skyline. I'm not sure about motors only.

Why do you think they are charging so much for the Skylines?

That's really gay because the 99spec FDs are at least as safe as the 93 if not more, and I know that the emmissions on them was improved as well over the 93s. Gayness.

So a 99 spec FD is safer and has lower emissions, yet still can't get in but a 93 can, retarded.

Stupid government crap, its all politics, playing to the big three who don't want forgien competion for their precious Vette and Viper

I love the slogan on that site: People saving people.
