New Engine won't start !!

Hi everyone

I have recently fitted a new engine on my FD which I bought from Dyson Rotary in Australia.

Its got new internals, unbreakable apex seals etc and is good for 500-550bhp or so. I've had a Greddy TD06-25G fitted (16cm exhaust housing), Bosch Fuel pump with Sytec filters with separate switches inside, Dyson Rotary fuel rails and surge tank and two 1680cc low impedance injectors (with resistors) apart from other mods like bigger oil coolers and FMIC. The ecu on the car is Apexi Power FC.

After everything was fitted, we put new fuel inside the tank (mixed with a very little amount of oil) and tried to start the new engine. After a few attampts, we managed to fire it up, but after it was idling for 2 mins, it just turned off. We tried to fire it up again several times until battery went dead after several attempts, so had it replaced. I took off the plugs and replaced them with new ones. I noticed there was quite a lot of oil on them, so decided to empty the tank again and put in racing fuel without oil. After some tries, we managed to fire it up, then there was a weird noise coming from the engine and it stopped. Tried to turn the crank with my hands and it turned only 180 degrees and stopped. The same when I tried to turn it the other way round. I decided to take off the gearbox to see if anything was wrong, but then my friend tried to turn it again and it was fine.

I took the car to the tuner to set up the Power FC but the car didn't start at all. Then we noticed when cranking, the pulleys were making this weird swirling movement :S Can anyone explain if its normal please?? I hope it ain't engine damage, its still brand new from Dyson

I am getting really frustrated and desperate I've spent loads of money on my FD but now wont even start it really makes me feel bad. If someone can shed some light on what the problem might be I would be VERY VERY grateful.

Thanks
Keith

A spray of starter fluid will usually get a new engine to fire, but it also looks like that e-shaft is bent since I can see the center bolt moving.

You have a bearing issue. The thrust bearing in the front stack most likely moved when the motor was assembled. This can also happen if the front pulley boss is removed without tilting the front of the engine up. Take off the front cover and look to see whats going on. If it were me I would just pull the motor. I would also drain the oil and see if there is any metal in it. For now stop cranking or trying to start the car because you will just cause more damage.

That's the front thrust bearing for sure. Can be done with the engine in the car. Same advise - don't start it anymore, fix it. The engine builder should reimburse you

thanks for your input guys. I have emailed Dyson Rotary to discuss what we're going to do about this.

Do you reckong this can be done easily with the engine in the car? Is it a very long and costly process? I might aswell do it if it doesnt cost a lot, rather than wait cos as usual its gonna take ages from Dyson!

If the engine ran like this it is highly likely the front or rear rotor gear has rubbed one of the irons. If indeed the thrust bearing was misaligned it is time to pull the motor.

Oh yeah, I didn't even think about the bearing. (thought it was odd to say that the e-shaft was bent, hah). Definitely the bearing.
