Need to replace my daily beater

My daily beater is a '91 Eclipse w/ 135k and can't pass NJ inspection because of the states tough emissions test.

What's a reliable car for around $4k?

Maybe a 1st or 2nd gen but what else would you suggest as an option?

Thanks

For a beater? What about a Honda?

I've had pretty good luck with my MKI MR2 ('86 - '89) - you can pick one up for around $2K.

If you go with a 1st gen, I'd get an '85 GSL-SE - 13B fuel injected w/ 3mm apex seals from the factory. They last forever. (The '84 GSL-SE may be the same, I'm not sure).

You could probably pick up a good 2nd gen for that price too.

What's wrong with the eclipse that it didn't pass? You COULD always just advance the timing a bit and somehow lower the fuel pressure, or even adjust the TPS so that the engine thinks it is at a lower rate of acceleration, or just disconnect one fuel injector and see what happens, but I don't recommend any of these things

Those cars you picked are rather different from each other. You looking for another sports car or a daily driver that you could just throw stuff in and not worry about it??
