Need informations on FD (european, bi-turbo)

Hi there.

I live in France and need some informations on this great car, I will use it for road + track.

In france the fuel cost a lot (like 5$/gal) and I ve heard that the RX7 drink a lot, but what are the numbers for normal use and for race-track use ? ( try to made it in liter/100km if some europeans are reading :> )

I've also read thats the breaking system is pretty good, but it's only 294mm (11,6) break disk. did it's enought to do some "serious" track or will I need to upgrade them with a big-break convertion ?

And then, in Europe we found some 92->94 versys with only 50 000Km (like 30 000Miles), this is very suspitious, is the "trip-meter" (dunno the real word for the thing who count the km/miles of the car) so easy to fake/modify ?

Thanks for your replys

Hi Trauma and welcome to the forum

I tried to convert everything the best that I can
Fuel consumption is about 8.6km a liter or so. It is a VERY thirsty little motor, but VERY rewarding. The brake discs ARE a little small, but since the 3rd generation RX-7 only weighs about 1045 kilos it can stop it from 100km to zero in about 34.1 meters! They brakes are good for very light track use, but if you plan on only using it for the track, then we would have to recommend you upgrade the brake system in order to prevent brake fade.

The odometers in these RX-7s are digital, and are VERY expensive to reprogram.

Thumbs up thanks a lot flybye.

8.6km/liter = 11.6 liters per 100km
this is way less than I expected, is this your "daily" consumption ?
I don't care if the car drink 40liters/100km when on track but I need to use it daily also.

I will not use it for "track only" use, but for some "club" track event, so the car need to be abble to take ~5~10 laps without fadding to much or twist the disks.
You speak about 1050kg ? I've read 1300kg for the FD twin-turbo (?)

I ve also read about reliabilty problems ? changing seal at 100 000KM seems realy important (that why I'm suspisous on odomoeters), can you tell me a bit more on reliability and what to look when buying a FD ?

thanks again to all of you

1245 kg is the correct weight. I've also seen FD's with low kilometers, actually I've never seen one here in Norway with more than 110.000km on it. Mine just passed 90.000km last summer, I'm spending the winter rebuilding the engine. It's not the car you would buy if you're looking for reliability, but it is the one you'd buy if you're looking for fun!

yes

With the low price of used cars I manage to pay an engine rebuild as soon I get it (if I), but this seems a second problem with the mazda's dealer who seems unable to maintain the car even in USA.
... Guess in France where they may sale less than 20 FD ... :PP

an used 93-94 RX7 cost around ~14 000$ and I can manage ~23 000$ on car + upgrade and reliability fix, but if nobody know the car ... will be hard :>

Same problem here! I'm doing all the work on the car myself, it's not really that hard when you start to understand how it works. And it's a lot of fun too! And it's very satisfying to know that you did it all yourself.
The Mazda dealer i spoke with didn't even know that Mazda produced the RX after 1990, don't wanna trust those guys!

hehe I'm not affraid by mecanics but I'm not mecanician, So I haven't the tools, the space and the time.
:P
But I agree it may be satisfying to work on it's own car.
