well the other day my car started to make a clunking noise from the center of the car. sounded like it was the tranny. and when its in idle it will fall like its going to die.

i recently figured out it was probably linked to my ac. i used it for a good 30 mins or so, so the ac is pretty cold. then that problem starts happening... this is only when the ac has been in use for a while... any ideas?

 

To make sure it IS the A/C causing the problem, run the car until it starts acting up, shut the a/c off and see if it stops. Try this several times to be sure it is consistent. If it is your a/c compressor, have the pressures checked for further diagnosis.
Some good possibilities are:
1. System is overcharged, building up high pressures and causing compressor to knock.
2. Compressor is worn out and about to go.
3. Air pump is going out ....mine made clunking noises after the car set up for about 6 weeks. I sprayed a little lubricant in the inlet hose and it hasn't made a noise since.
4. Power steering pump is low on fluid or worn out.

My 94 has a similar rapping or clunking noise with the AC on, at idle. The engine/drivetrain is shaking a little from the extra load. Have not checked it out from underneath yet , but I think some part of the exhaust is hitting something.
