Getting rid of the stock precat is not only ok, it is highly recommended. There's a step by step write up on how to do it in the FAQ. It's not an easy install however.

get that precat off the car ASAP. its one of the worst things to have on the car!. if you ask me its unsafe and will only damage all the parts under the hood over time. heat is the worst thing for a rotary engine.

The stock pre catalytic converter is what a downpipe replaces. It holds heat in the engine, which is bad. It's also prone to clogging.

Edit: Sorry, I didn't answer your qhestion. It's rear passenger side of the engine bay. Look down between the engine and ABS unit. You'll see a fat silver pipe coming off the turbos. That's the precat.

Wrap it in fiberglass wrap from summit or DEI or have Jet Hot coat it. That will keep the heat out of the engine bay even more. Buy some new studs for when you do this job, too.
