Need help from experienced PFC users!!

Hi All!

Got a question for experienced PFC users. When I purchased my FD, it came w/ a PFC. I have borrowed my friends wideband and hooked it up on my FD, and found the PFC to be tuned very poorly. Because I don't have any plans to change the boost setting any time soon, I had acquired a stock ECU from a generous forum member which I planned to install in my FD. When I feel like turning up the boost in the future, I will again installed the PFC back in the FD and tune it properly.

When I disconnected the PFC from my FD, I noticed that there were some wires that were hanging by the connectors. I left the harness the way it was and plugged in the stock ECU. The car fired right up without any problems, but when I tried driving it, it wouldn't let me accelerate hard; the car is either running way too rich or way too lean. It ran like absolute crap. Upon every down shift, the car would backfire non-stop for like 5 seconds. I'm wondering:

1) the ECU I bought says N3A1. Did I purchase the correct ECU?

2) after some research, I found that the wires that were cut are for the solenoid valve (turbo control 1 and turbo contorl 2), ISC (idle speed control) solenoid valve, split air bypass solenoid valve, and EGR switch. Do you think the reason why the stock ECU was acting up was because these wires were cut?

oh, all of the emission equipment have been removed on my FD.

Thank you all very much for helping me out!

1 - yes

2 - yep. probably the stock ecu going into limp-home mode. Use a quick splice or something similar to re-connect the 4 wires.

when you say the emissions equipment has been removed, do you mean the airpump has been removed?

If so, the car will run like a bag on the stock ECU - if at all.

You can get base maps for the PFC from many places, just tell them your bolt ons and they send you a base map. This will be better than the stock ECU in any case, and will also give you better gas mileage.

Stick with the PFC dude!

It is very likely several solenoids have been removed, which will cause a stock ecu to "freak out" and not run properly. This can be mitigated by wiring resistors into the wiring so the ecu thinks they are there.

The best solution is to put the PFC back in, reset it to the default map, and run it only vacuum and light boost until you can get the PFC tuned or you can start tuning it with your wideband. There are great tuning references in the Single Turbo and PFC forums (Wargasm and Cewrx7r1).
