Need help buying
Hey guys,
Well heres my situation, im pretty much familiar with the rx7 and the rotary, however that is with the japanese version. I lived in japan for 6years due to my dad being in the military and now i have moved back to the states. i owned the newest version of the rx7 but could not bring it back due to the costs.
however, I found a 94 rx7 automatic tranny, please understand, that is all i could find here in texas after 1year of searching. i was wondering what are they prone to? that would help alot along with any other info on the 94's. i have my eyes set on it and it is beautiful. please help me decide. thanks.
oh btw i am 18 and a college student. im pretty much wanting to keep it stock, police down here are iffy when it comes to imports. my school is approx 5miles and work 1.5miles from home. other than that im in my garage building something. let me know if i should get it
94 rx7 automatic tranny
104000miles, rebuilt at 65000
1owner purchased at 94 new.
seals hoses etc. have been updated.
they are asking for 9000.
let me know any info on the reliability and any kind of links to maintenance of this particular model, thank you.

Look around in the 3rd gen F/S section on here before making your decision. Unless you want an automatic you'll kick yourself in the *** in the long run for not getting a standard.
i've not regretted my auto 1 second. constant boost... no mis-shifts. pedal and gone.
there's not a lot of us out there with autos. it's about 1k to convert it to manual . some folks think the auto's top out at ~300-350whp. No one has really done that much testing on the autos in that power range. It's kind of like that in most aftermarket clubs... everyone says 5 speeds are better... no one tests and everyone seems to forget that most drag cars are automatics. annoys the crap out of me.
my FD is in pieces atm but I plan on staying auto until I wear the transmission out.. and then i'll either rebuild the auto with better components or swap in a ford c4 tranny (also automatic) http://www.fd3s.net/magazine_article...article_2.html
9k is a good price for an auto FD in good shape (in my book).
reliability option for any auto fd is to add a transmission cooler. heat kills auto transmissions. the auto FD comes with a standard cooler. I have it and an aftermarket cooler on my ride. for cooling options i wouldn't use anything but B&M transmission coolers.

if you'll be daily driving the auto is nice. if you want to run circuit tracks then i would recommend looking for a 5-speed. straight line racing autos win... curves? not so much.

Auto is the way to go for drag cars, yes. I'm just saying there is a big difference between driving an auto and a manuel sports car. If you want a manuel and get an auto there is a chance of disappointment after you get used to it and start noticing the options that may have better suited you that you have to pass up. It's purely a personal preference thing and if you don't go with your own personal preference you could end up unhappy. Autos are great prices when it comes to these cars. These cars are also great for so much more than driving it in a straight line, not that everyone wants to track their car. So, you have to think about what purpose you want the car to serve and take that into serious consideration when buying AND modifying. Think long and hard and make informed decisions to impulse decisions.
If you plan to autocross or track the car, get a 5 speed. If you plan to drag race then maybe an automatic is better. If you plan to drive it on the street, buy the one that matches your wants/budget.
There are plenty of RX-7s for sale. Use every method out there to find them and be willing to travel. If you look only locally you will probably be limited.

Auto car went 9.4 @ 79 as its best pass in the 1/8th, 5 speed car went 8.3@84. The stock auto is horrible from a dig, down right ridiculous. I have driven close to 10 auto fds and everyone was the same, I kept hoping each one I had driven had issues or something but eventually accepted it as reality, on the interestate the two cars above were almost a perfect even match.

To the op, there are a bunch of good deals out there, dont be afraid to buy outside of TX and have the car shipped in, spend a full day on craigslist and you will be shocked what you find.
Good Luck
