Need help with buy decision on '93 R1

Hey guys and gals!

Brand spankin' new here. I'm hoping to buy a '93 R1 here in the next week or so, but I needed some expert (or quasi-expert) advice before I do.

Here's what I know. 88K miles, a rebuild at 84K. Hail damage and a bad paint/bondo job (very minor) are causing the repainted parts to fade...nothing a new paint job won't fix. Bone stock except for the stereo.

The rear suspension is making an absolutely horrible noise when driven over rough streets. He says he's replaced the bushings and his mechanic can't tell him what's wrong.

The gearbox and tranny? seem to get pretty warm. Maybe I'm just not used to the car's heat output, or maybe there's something amiss. Dunno.

The car drives like a charm and for $11,400 I feel like it's totally worth it IF all has been disclosed.

So my questions are:

1. What do you think the rear suspension noise is and is it fixable?

2. What do you think of the heat "problem" or lack thereof?

3. Do you think it's a good deal with the info. given?

I've been searching around tonight but can't seem to get definitive answers with the search terms I'm using. I'm new to this, so don't give me the "go to hell" and search it yourself just yet. I'll deserve it more later.

Thanks!

That's a pretty cheap price for an R1. Get a compression test done on the motor. Also, does he have a boost gauge? You're asking a loaded question, and I don't feel like typing a two page answer I live about 45 mins north of you; PM me your phone # if you'd like to talk more on the phone.

Thanks for the quick reply Rich.

I'm definitely not looking for an endorsement to buy the car...ultimately it's my problem if I screw it up.

Mainly I'm looking to find out if what I listed above are "common" 3rd G RX problems. If they are, that means someone's seen it and it's fixable. If not, or if they're BIG problems, I wanna know from guys and gals who have owned the cars.

Anyone else have any input?

Thanks again Rich. PM'd you.

1. Have the seller prove he had the rear suspension bushings replaced. Get the car up on a jack or lift and see if you can wiggle the rear tires.

2. There is probably an aftermarket downpipe and main cat that weren't jet coated before installation. When you remove the stock main cat a lot of heat shielding comes away with it. The heat from the new downpipe and cat then soaks thru the transmission tunnel.

Speaking from experience here. The fix was custom heat shields for the cat and a wrap on the downpipe.

Personnally I'd look for a lower mileage car with less probs.

Good luck!
