Exclamation Need Help Bad!! What makes Coils Over heat and Crack

I have had this issue going on for a while now and cant figure out whats going on. Both trailing coils are Getting damaged somehow. Im running factory ignitor with a haltech E6K. I have an MSD 6A on the Leading between the Ignitor and the coil and on the trailing im going straight from the ignitor to the coils through my own wiring. I ran a signal wire directly from the ignitor to the trailing coils and just used the factory power wire for 12v power. here is the final outcome. Both coils fry and the trailing in the ignitor goes bad.

Any ideas!?!

Bad grounding, or a short. We have seen this in a car that the drivers side tire had rubbed through the inner fender lining, then through the harness causing the coils to short out and fry exactly like that, with the internal material oozing out.

Doesn't the factory coil harness have its own ground wire?

The early 93's had a separate ground wire. It was changed in the 94's and up.

ouch...yea you have a constant positive source all the time, and the negative wire is switched on in every time it needs spark..if you get a constant negative signal it will melt...if you hook up an ignition box and if you accidently connect the ground shield wire and the normal negative wire to the ignition box..it will melt the coils since the shield wire is a constant ground wire.

A couple of things for you to consider:

You mentioned wiring. Are you aware that the factory coil harness contains resistance wire (on the primary side I think) which prevents excessive current flow through the coils? This is essential for proper performance. Once you hit a certain point known as coil saturation, more or longer current flow does not enhance the spark [esp. in an inductive discharge ignition system]. It will just overheat the coils and the ignitor; it is a common cause of coil meltdown.

If this is your problem, and I suspect that it is, you can fix it by putting a resistor of proper equivalent value into your trailing coils' primary circuit.

One other possibility I should mention is duty cycle. I don't know what the "dwell" is on your system (Haltech), but if it's too long, you could also overheat the coils--especially at lower rpm's.

the dwel is at 2.7 what my next plan is, is to just wire the whole set up back through the factory wires and out a 4 plug weather pack at the coil harness. this is the only other option i can think of to eliminate the problem.

im using an FC leading coil with my hyfire 6 box. works great. i hear they are more durable to high power ignition than the fd leading coil is. since youv got a haltech or w/e it world work well i'd think..just mounting it is a bitch..right now mine is zip tied to the master cylinder and it looks a little silly.

I dont see why your doing this. Somehow they are seeing constant voltage. It might be somehow related to your quote above. Not saying your wrong at all. I might just not be thinking properly tonight... I just got done playing/troubleshooting with my ignition setup as well. Goodluck.

the coils are suppose to get constant 12v + power. it's the ground that is switched to close the circuit.

What aftermarket coils can we replace these with?

How can you connect MSD Blaster coils with the stock harness?

Looking to upgrade the coils, Thx.

get any coil that has dual points for 2 plug wires. it's just a wastespark system, both plugs fire at the same time for the leading. one while in combustion stroke and the other while in exhaust. i've heard alot of good about their 2 point motorcycle coil since it has good power output. technically a 2 point from like a GM V6 or whatever MSD upgrade for it could be. theres a thread on here somewhere with a P/N of the best coil
