Exclamation Need help and advice transmission related

Ok I know the pilot bearing and throwout bearing have been discussed at length in this forum. I am not sure where my problem lies but I can tell you that I believed from all that is written in this forum that my pilot bearing was going bad. After leaving the car with my mechanic for a boost related issue he believes that it is the transmissions main bearing. It whines pretty good in neutral but goes away when I push the clutch in. I can hear it whining away from first up through third gear where all the other noises of the car and road seem to catch up and drowned it out. Some days it isn't as bad as others but it is quite noticeable.

Not being as familiar with transmissions as I feel I should be I am wondering what approximate costs for repairing each of these ailments and what each specifically is. Pilot bearing, throwout bearing and main transmission bearing are the ones in question. My mechanic has quoted me anywhere from $2000-$4000 to pull the transmission and essentially rebuild and reinstall it if it is the "main transmission bearing". How close to resonable does this sound? How long can I let this whine go on before something catastrophic happens?

Thanks for any help you all can give me. This forum really is a god send for me and the entire RX-7 Community.

I have already had my trans rebuilt twice and bought a used one that turned out to be no good, thats why I had the second rebuild. My first one cost 950, because they said I needed a new fifth gear. The second one was 800, but I brought in both transmissions and had them make one good one out of it so the only parts purchased was the main bearing. If I did it all over again I would have just bought a brand new one from Malloy for 2100 and be done with it. If you went this route and switched it yourself you would spend maybe 2300 for a new trans, shipping, fluid, throwout, and pilot bearing. Those prices were me pulling the trans and taking it in loose.

2-4k$ is WAY too much. Contact drivetrain.com for a quote.

Chances are it is your main bearing, as well. Check out the search function.
