Need help about purchasing an RX7

Ive found a 1994 RX-7 Automatic with 55k origional miles for 5000 dollars.

Im not sure what model it is as the has the front bumper lower chin, no foglights, rear spoiler, no STB, no sunroof, and leather seats. Maybe a touring model

Anyways history on the car that I have found out is the daughter bought it new but has problems with the engine. During street driving it would ocassionally lose power and rarely die. Its been since sitting for 2 years and they are just now selling it to get rid of it. It does have some body damage on the front fender and rear fender from a tree limb falling on it.

Ive always wanted one and watched many friends go through them, hince my membership since 6-14-2002. Anyways does it sound like a good deal or anything I need to check on it? The battery was dead and we were able to start it, the father couldnt find his battery charger. Im just really worried about it setting for so long as well as engine repair or replacement.

At $5k it sounds like a decent deal even if you need to rebuild the engine. However the symptoms you describe don't sound like that.

If you're willing to take a risk you can probably take the car to a good rotary mechanic and have it running with a bunch of maintenance / reliability work done for another $2k. Just a WAG. The inside of the engine might not be in the greatest shape, but at 55k miles a perfectly stock FD might need a new engine at some point soon.

If you work on cars and are not in a rush to get it on the road this sounds like a good project. If you have a good rotary shop nearby it might still be a good project but it will be more of a risk.

I agree 100% with dave. For $5k, it sounds like a pretty good deal. From what you described it does not sound like a bad motor, though that motor is not going to be in the greatest of shape at 100% stock and 55k miles. And if the previous owner did not really understand the rotary when she purchased it, it is a safe ussumption it was not treated with the maintenance it probably needed. With sitting for 2 years the stagnant coolant may have done a bit of damage as well.

As for what model it is, you could find out easily with the VIN, just look it up. To guess, it is NOT a touring (no sun/moonroof) someone could have easily added leather seats to it. Look for the second oil cooler to check for the possibility of an R model that is missing a few exterior pieces. Other than that it could just be a base although I am not sure how many automatic base models were produced.

For 5k, it is a good deal. Pick it up, and if you are mechanically competant see if you can get it to start and if it does and runs ok, do simple reliability things. Spark plugs, wires, oil, filter, fuel filter, replace coolant and hoses, vac lines, etc. The body work sounds fairly minor and I bet any decent body shop can get that fixed right up.
