Need Help;fd Problem!

Was sitting in the 5 o clock traffic today in Dublin and noticed the car started to idle a little funny.I was oblivious to the fact that my Apexi commander was showing me that the water temperature was at 112 degrees!!! .I pulled in straight away and knocked off the engine.I popped the hood and immediately thought I had a water leak somewhere?No leak.I realised that the fans weren't working so with me sitting in the traffic and the fans not working,its no wonder the engine was boiling!!!It was only up the road from the girlfriends house so I left it for about 3 hours and came back to it.I topped up with water and started the car and let it heat up.The apexi ecu normally kicks my fans in at 91 degrees but it didn't so I realised my problem is the fans ain't working.I just did a quick job and gave them a permanent feed with a spare bit of cable,tape and a snips till I got home and disconnected it.Just wondering has anyone had this problem or know where I should go from here to tackle the problem?I have already been told that my thermostat is probably fucked but would this cause the fans not to work also?I was thinking more along the lines of a relay or electrical fault?Any suggestions would be great!Thanks

i would say check the fan clutch first...its not uncommon for that to wear out over time..

have you changed the temp that the fans kick in ? cos my PFC on the base map only clicks them on at 97 degrees C ..... just saying if you haven't changed it, then you may need to wait for 97 .....

they do click off at 91 for me however

You could be right but they weren't coming on when the car was at 112 degrees.My fd usually sits at 85 degrees.I haven't changed it.

i almost had the same situation... car idled funny sometimes, then one day temp shot up to 114, turned off, checked, waited, then drove 2 blocks home, before i got home though the temp dropped fast... later i change my idle rev all to 900, then havent had the problem of idle or heat yet, hottest its gotten was 97... i believe my fans are set to turn on at 94 or 97, dont remember exactly, but (correct me if im wrong) the fans are supposed to turn on when lights or ac is on? did you try that? everytime i use my ac or my headlights the fans come on, so if its hot out i use my parking lights or turn on my ac to low just in case... i dont know for sure if the idle or rev settings directly have anything to do with this, but since its been changed my car drives pretty normal... i dont know if that helps you in any way, but just thought id throw in my experience... good luck!!!

Hey man,thanks for that!it all sounds familiar.My mate (who is an rx7 tuner but has no idea what the problem is!!!)says the a/c and the side lights should knock on the fans but that wasn't happening for me.I pulled my ac out a while back anyways!He says he has the fans set to come on for 95 degrees.At the time it happened I had my lights on dipped so the parking lights were on too and still nothing.I'm leaning towards a relay problem but still not sure?thanks for that anyways!

Here's part of the info from www.fd3s.net about how the fans work:

In a nutshell, here is how the fans work: There are 4 relays. Fans are wired in parallel, so speeds are same for both. Relays 2&4 operate in parallel, too.

When the relays come on:

* Relays 2 & 4 controlled by PCME, come on when temp reaches 221F.
* Relay 3 controlled by thermoswitch, comes on at 226F
* Relay 1 controlled by A/C switch.

How fan speed affected by relays:

* Off, none on
* Low speed comes on when relays 2 & 4 are active.
* Med speed comes on when 2 & 4 are on plus _either_ 3 or 1 comes on but not both
* High speed comes on when all are on.

Other facts:

* The fan controller can bypass the 226 thermoswitch and fake out the relays 2 & 4.
* Grounding the test lead _immediately_ turns on relay 3.
* When you ground the test lead then the fan controller waits 2 min and turns on 2 & 4.
* If the test lead grounded for 2 minutes before engine shutoff, relays 2,3,4 will be kept on.
Start by putting direct current to the fans to make sure they turn on. If they do, then you have something in the above components which isn't working.

Right guys,attacked my fd and fans today to see if I could solve the fan problem but to no avail.Was at it the whole day,checked the relays,1 wasn't working so replaced that.Thought that was the problem and then I let the car heat up and again no fans at 101*C.Went through the wiring diagram on the forum and couldn't see where to attack next.There was a new thermostat put in 3k kms ago so wasn't that.Checked all cooling fan fuses and all were ok so ruled out them,the thermostat and the relays.My side lights and AC ain't operating my fans so I have gremlins somewhere but it got late and our heads were melted so we called it a day.Just running a manual switch in that operates the fans when it starts to heat up.Anyone else any tips???would much appreciate advice.Thanks.

Was it overheating coz your fans weren't working?when you found this problem did it fix it when you plugged it back in?
