need ATF just to start... all the time!

Well, anytime I want to start my car, I have to do the ATF trick and it starts right up. If I try to start it normally, it turns over and tries to start up but never quite catches. Just want to confirm that I need a rebuild on the motor before I go and get one...

That's *a* sign of a rebuild. You won't know for sure until you get a compression test and probably tear apart the engine.
